Even the Government aren't stupid enough to not realize you can't get tax without MOT test.
Some Plod are though. Like the Probationer who was with his tutor when they pulled me over in Jan (strangely enough in the exact same circumstances)

Probie straight outta training centre was so happy with 'his spot' he was practically trying to lick his own balls.

Being ex plod myself in the locality I happened to know the Tutor PC. So it was suitably resolved.

yes and quite rightly so, if he is innocent as it would seem he has nothing to worry about. ANPR cameras are one of the better uses of police time IMO.
We're all guilty until proven innocent now supersingle, didn't you get the memo...?

AS with most laws in this country there are 'reasonable exceptions'

Pre booked MOTs is one for not having tax or MOT.

I agree with the post that said ANPRs are one of the better uses of Police time, keeps more uninsured, unlicensed and general scumbags off the road for those of us that DO abide by the laws (well, some laws)
This. with anything regarding 'law breaking' there is reasonable cause/mitigating circumstances. It's illegal to drink-drive, but in a life/death situation you are allowed to (such as if someone is threatening you).
Can't remember where I read it, but there was a case of a man who drive home (1 mile away)drunk after leaving the pub. In his defence, he was fleeing the pub as someone started a fight with him. But it didn't stand up in court because the police station was half a mile away.

funnily enough there's a big piece in The Sunday Times InGear section today.

Mainly around that chap who got aquitted of speeding having been zapped at 128mph on the M6.

I thought you are allowed to drive an untaxed vehicle to an MOT centre.
Indeed, if you can prove it. So the OP just has to send a copy of his MOT along with a cover letter explaining what happened and it should be ok. I say should.....
So, basically he has to prove his innocence...
No he has to explain away his guilt, he is guilty of driving without Tax but he was legal because of the exemption assuming he had pre-booked the MOT and driven directly there and back and not done any further mileage without a valid tax disc displayed on his vehicle.

Semantics.

He has to go to some considerable effort to prove that he was doing something absolutely and entirely legal. If he doesn't he will be prosecuted. Sounds like proving your innocence to me.

The trouble is it's hard work for the authorities to prove people's guilt. Much easier to make a load of absolute offences and assume everyone is guilty by default then wait for all the "offenders" to present themselves.

ok so maybe I should have been clearer.

1. It was a pre-booked MOT
2. The letter was only warning sugggesting I need to get tax.

So for all you guys moaning that I got caught, its clear that I had no intention of breaking the law and did not break the law.

My point was the big brother society. Just remember all it takes for you to have a name similar to a terrorist suspect and you could find all these cameras beiing used to track you....

All made a bit worse, by the fact that the police DO keep the data gathered for a considerable length of time

Far better to have real terrorists wandering around unchecked than living with the fear that I might have a similar name to a terrorists suspect and the authorities might get the names confused and then might start tracking me with cameras.

Ironically if they had followed him with their CCTV cameras they might have realised he was the wrong guy. Instead people on the ground (with guns) took over.

Have you read what I have written. Its nothing to do with uninsured drivers, getting caught or whatever. Its about the fact that we are all under surveillance wherever we go. dig out a copy of 1984 from your local library and have a read.
