If you are very economical with the tyres, your driving will become very exciting. Wusses buy Pirellis, Bridgestones and Michelins. Nankangs, Linglongs and part-worn remoulds are for real drivers. Anyone who objects has aids.

I did think about getting something interesting for the weekend but I would rather put all my money into 1 car and try and have my cake and eat it so to speak!

I quite like the idea of some of the 3 series deisels, seems to cover most bases. Just not sure how 'exciting' they are?

Serious hat on: modernish cars tend to be competent and make fast driving safe. The only way to get excitement is to cram extra power under the bonnet.

So I have looked at most big ish cars I can think of around £10 - £15K
Herein lies the problem. If you want to make something big go quickly you have to burn a lot of fuel generally.

Elises, Caterhams and the little Renaultsport Clios are undoubtedly exciting and will return the best part of 40mpg when you're driving more sedately, put to get anywhere near that with an S-Type sized performance car you're currently looking at a sporty diesels, and the best (335D, current Alpina D3 etc.) are still beyond that price range.

So, while there definitely are exciting frugal cars, there won't be that many within your other requirements. Maybe consider getting a week day diesel barge and then something more sporting for the weekends? For £15k you could get any of the above or something a big more racuous like a TVR and still have money left over for an older diesel Passat or BMW 5 Series. That's more or less what I've done for the past couple of years (albeit with a cheaper daily driver).

A 2007 onwards BMW 330i (yes 'i' - 272hp, three litre six cyl) has an official combined mpg figure of 39.2mpg.

Have your cake and eat it.

Still not sure any of these are exciting though to be fair..... Competant/decent/maybe even excellent but exciting I dont know?

Starting to think the whole 2 car thing may be the only way to go.

That said trying to choose 2 cars in one go might end up killing me or at the very least cause me a divorce!!

You can have big and economical (520d, S80 1.6DriveE)

And you can have economical and exciting (Lotus Elise, Renaulstsport Clio etc)

But I can't think of anything big and exciting, let alone big, exciting and economical.
