Subjectively, the VW is better looking.

Objectively, the BMW is a better drive.

1 Series Coupes in M-Sport spec look good.
However, the VW doesn't look good in any spec.... IMHO. To me it looks like a big fat giant has sat on a Golf and squashed it... yuck

Rwd of the BMW would mean it gets my vote too.

To add something completely irrelevant: the Scirocco is a much more practical car, but considering you're talking about a Scirocco and a 1-series I doubt that that's of any interest.
The 1-series would be a much better drive.

I do think people are being a bit harsh on the way the Scirocco drives. How many of the people saying that the BMW is a much better drivers' car have actually driven a Scirocco?

I don't know what you're budget is, or whether or not you're buying new or used - i'd imagine new?

I would pick neither and buy a used E92 3-Series Coupe instead as you're getting all the benefits of the 1-Series but in something that doesn't look like a bowler hat and i'd say was a better car IMO, no i've not driven a 1-Series before people ask, although used to have a 335i Coupe.

The Scirocco is better equipped model for model and the supercharged and turbocharged 1.4 TSI engine is a lot more modern than the dated 2.0 N/A petrol unit the 120i uses, so I'd probably take the VW. Both are good cars though.

I was disappointed with the 1-Series I drove - didn't feel like anything special.
We didn't consider the Scirocco (OH dislikes VW) but ended up with a Volvo C30 which felt a much better place to be given that the vast majority of our miles are in 30 limits or on motorway.

If you spend a lot of time thrashing up and down well-sighted, lightly traffic'd A and B roads then maybe the RWD would be worth it, but it certainly wasn't to us.

I test drove a 123D Coupe against a Scirocco 2.0Tsi in Sept 2009 (Diesel v Petrol I know but down to availability and similar price), and personally felt the BMW to be leagues ahead.

I bought the 123D (remapped now of course biggrin ) and after 18 months I don't regret it one bit, probably the best car I have ever owned as a daily driver and have no desire to change it which is very unusual for me after 18 months.

It was also difficult at the time to find a high spec Scirocco at a decent price (leather, xenons, nav etc) whereas there were more well specced 1-er's avaialable, but that may have changed now.

EFA.
But it ain't.

The Einer is tall, skinny, short and not particularly heavy.

As some of you know my missus had a total disaster with her 1 Series over the clutch judder issue.

She was offered a full refund. She didn't like how she was treated by the BMW dealer nor BMW so the search started for a replacement.

The VW just didn't compare to the Beemer. I wanted it to be so much better or just as fun as the BMW (to shut the wife up) but it was a big let down. The car felt nowhere near its asking price.
I would rather be in a Golf as I see this VW as being a bit pointless. The adaptive suspension was good if too under damped in normal mode. Felt a lot more spritely in sport but I cant see why they bothered. Just make it sport like the BMW.

The BMW steering is vastly superior and no torque steer.

We looked and drove others. A3, Cupra, Alfa ended up in another 1er Msport from the same bd stealer.

But it's a cracker and no probs so far.

I would say Beemer if pressed I think (it,s much more cohesive and 'grown-up' than the 1 Series hatch). But then the Scirocco has come out of most group tests Ive read very favourably indeed, it's arguably the better looker, and like it's predecesor (the Corrado) seems to be one of the best handling front wheel drive cars as well as being a practical and painless ownership proposition..a tough choice..it will all come down to your preference on a (preferably extended/half day) test drive of both.

just found this thread from a search. didn't expect to see so much of a downer on the scirocco. why so? i've driven 30k miles in a 1 series coupe m-sport and when pressing on it just doesn't feel tight enough (bit soft and rolls too much). i assumed the scirocco was more focused, but it seems i'm wrong?

Did someone tick the "M-Sport suspension delete" option on your car perhaps?

It does happen (not saying it has in your case) and something to look out for when buying used.

i went to order a silver m-sport, but they had a black m-sport in the showroom so i took it. i don't particularly trust car dealers but surely they wouldn't have pretended it was a...no...can't be. surely.

Why....?

Probably because it's comparing apples and oranges, as the BM is rwd and the Scirocco is fwd, and of course this is PH were rwd driving gods rule tongue outlaugh

And which M-Sport version do you have...?

Come resale time I'd prefer to be selling the Scirocco.
