RE: BMW M6 revealed
Discussion
When I bought my 911 the choice was between that or an R8 or V8V, they were all lovely cars so the decision came down to running costs including MPG etc...
The 911 won because at the time it was my daily driver and I was doing 20k+, if your only doing a few miles then running costs become less of an issue.

there is simply the convenience of filling it up less frequently.
If the petrol displaced another 1000cc it would probably be a better bet IMO
The former. If the petrol displaced another 1000cc it would probably be a better bet IMO
If the petrol displaced another 1000cc it would be even less economical.

I find it a little sad TBH that when buying a sports car in that price range that MPG would be a major contributing concern when choosing. If the cars were uttery equal in all other ways then fair enough, but the three cars you mention are so utterly different in their approach that I cant believe that which one might cost a few £100's a year less to fuel would be a deciding factor. The 911 won because at the time it was my daily driver and I was doing 20k+, if your only doing a few miles then running costs become less of an issue.

Most people have a cut off point, especially when they're buying on credit. A few years ago someone might have been able to raise £95k on finance. Now things have changed, that same person might be limited to £80k.There's also a psychological cut off point. It's hard to get your head paying £100k for a BMW.

As stated before the M6 is a very expensive car, that is obvious and if it’s a shock to you well, what planet have you been living on this last few yearsThere's also a psychological cut off point. It's hard to get your head paying £100k for a BMW.
Nowadays an Vauxhall Astra or VW Golf diesel can cost £25k for example
And in last months Top Gear mag they have a new long term car – an Audi A6 3.0 TDI Avant with some tasty options – price – £80k – and remember this has the same platform as a Skoda Superb
Fact is an M6 is a flashy top of the range BMW with a 550BHP V8 etc – sadly it’s gonna cost the earth.
And some buyers [esp. in China and Middle East] want it to be as expensive as possible for bragging reasons, ridiculous I know, but this is the reality and the way of the world we live in!
And you could spend the list price of an M6 on the options list for a Ferrari 599
And so on

They were all lovely (to me) so when I drew up my list of pros and cons on each car the deciding factor was the running costs, as the other pros and cons canceled each other out.
By my calculations the Aston and R8 would have cost £1000's more to run in fuel costs (I've done 50k in 2.5 years) and for what advantage as they are no better IMHO than the 911, so why pay more?
I'm happy, I like the fact that the car can do 189mph and a 10sec 100mph sprint yet also deliver over 30mpg on a motorway cruise.

Thats unbelievable!
Remember that is a car given to Topgear to showcase what can be had if you want it! 20'' wheels, nightvision, etc. I imagine the equivelant BMW or Merc could easily specced up the same! The BMW is still knocking on the door of some very exotic and unique machines! Is it really a car that would make you turn round to have one last look before you walked awy like an Ason, Maserati or even a Fisker!

I bought the previous 650 vert, so it's hardly a shock for me. I was thinking about upgrading, but I think they're taking the piss with their price increases. Wills2 said:

but then you could argue that the BMW 640d makes the M6 irrelevant. As a Autobahn-stormer, the 640d covers 95% of the performance that the M6 can offer but would use far less fuel (therefore travel further on one tank), is probably a more comfortable cruiser, costs less to buy and as a percentage would retain more of its initial purchase value.
But in markets that don't need a diesel, I'm thinking the US and China this will do extremely well, an example is the X6M in the US. Autocar stated that it's selling so well that they have delayed the launch of the hybrid. Some of these cars may not stack up in the UK but do in other larger markets.

I have never read a more stupid comment than this – the GTR makes the M6 obsolete
For a start they aren’t even competitors but even if they were, it still a ridiculous statement
Going by that stupid logic then – something like an EVO X FQ360 makes nearly ALL Mercedes c classes, Audi A4, jax XF;s Audi A6, Merc E class and S class, even most Bentleys etc all obsolete – as its faster and cheaper
And then say if a 320d is faster and cheaper than a C220d, or even an E220d or 520d, A6 2.0 TDi – the 320d makes all those cars obsolete – because it’s cheaper and faster [and they are all 4 door saloons]
And something like a Meganne RS 265 makes a every car that slower and more expensive than it ‘obsolete’, i.e. golf GTi and every car like that is totally obsolete, the Meganne would also make most 3 Series, C classes and Audi A4’s obsolete
And as previous people stated the GTR makes ALL Porsches, Jags, Bentley, most Ferraris, Merc's, BMW, Audi, etc obsolete?
I could go on and on but you get my drift – saying the GTR makes the M6 obselete is a completely idiotic statement
You could apply the same logic to houses – if you have house a costs says 200k and has 5 bedrooms – so its makes house B with 4 bedrooms that cost 250k totally obsolete as it’s bigger and cheaper – end of story. There are different factors people take into account when purchasing anything, it’s not pure measurements and price
Bit of a binary way of thinking there. For a start they aren’t even competitors but even if they were, it still a ridiculous statement

The biggest problems for the M6 Coupe are very simply the 640d which makes a better GT, and the GTR which is a better sports car. Both of which are significantly cheaper.
It's great that BMW are making the M6 but I just don't think it will excel enough in any particular area including desirability to justify the price, especially when you consider residuals.
