RE: Dacia Duster
Discussion
Think I`d have a used Land Cruiser 100 over this.
My dad bought one new in 1998, 200.000 miles now and not a single expense aside from tyres and servicing.
Well once the leveling suspension locked up and the Toyota dealership fixed it no expense.
Aside from that, repainted once because one of his hunting mates accidentally shot the car when a grouse flew by it

I dont understand why someone would buy a POS like this and spend £10k on it, why not just buy a second had premium brand for the same price?
Two reasons, people don't want to pay £1000 a time to fix ECUs etc, second, some people want new car not some one else's cast off, plus new you get a warrantee!I think they could have made it more bare bones. As above, it would be nice to have a car that is easy to fix and hopefully be so basic that there is little to go wrong.
I'm not looking to buy new but would be interested to see the prices in 3 years time or less. Mind you, if people buy them as keepers the few that go for secondhand sale might go for a decent price.

Followed one of these Dusters down a freeway today and re-confirmed that whilst there is something pleasing in their simplicity I still don't see the point.
Seems to do nothing that a lightly used Yeti (if you want the shape) or Forester (if you want to cross a field) will not do better.

A lightly used Duster will be cheaper than a lightly used Forester or Yeti, would it not? Seems to do nothing that a lightly used Yeti (if you want the shape) or Forester (if you want to cross a field) will not do better.
Why is it people cannot compare like for like?

Why spend money on a duster/yeti/whatever right?? Does the same job.

What I am comparing is what I could get for the money as most people commence their car choice with a budget.
If you want to buy new then fair play but the observation is valid.
Well, I can easily see how someone would rather have the brand new car, rather than the year old car, for the same price. If you want to buy new then fair play but the observation is valid.

Yeah the sensation of buying brand new lasts all the way from the forecourt to your front lawn, also known as the "2000 pound parade march"
When I rule the world buying brand new cars will be banned.Everyone will be forced to buy 5 year old cars to give better value for money.

There will always be suckers out there buying brand new cars.
The fact that they do is great for everyone else, but enough people doing it doesnt mean it isnt stupid.
Loads of people smoke, by definition then it cant be that stupid can it??
And before anyone bothers, yes I realise there are more successful people out there than me who couldnt give a rats ass about 5k depreciation alone in the first year..

Im very much in the used car camp having never had a new one, and not having the credit rating to even consider it an option...
But i do 15k work miles a year.. id happly run it to the end of time.
Id never be wondering how long i can put off x or y job before catastrophic failure.
Or immediately have a list of things to fix or make good as soon as i have it parked on the drive.
And theres no way this can possibly loose 5k in a year.
I like Shedding.. but id also like to have a new car that i can keep till it dies.. better this than some horrid plastic supermini
