Fueling on the "wrong side"

I've often wondered about this - if you're that worried about damaging your cars then how do you manage to drive them along the road, what with all the gravel, potholes, muck, puddles and (worst of all), other people, without being a nervous wreck? Grahamdub said:

At my local Shell garage, it’s actually got big signs on the pumps telling people that the hoses will reach either side.
So has ours, but still they queue for the "right" side. I just drive past, fill up and pay while they are still queuing Have to be honest, I always fill up 'correct' side, but that's more to do with my laziness at not wanting to do any more work than is absolutely necessary, including having to drag the hose over and hold it away from the car.
I'd never cause an obstruction queuing however, that's just madness, and if anyone wants to beat the queue by filling up on the 'wrong' side, power to them.
However I was once shouted at by a woman sitting there doing her hair after filling up, for squeezing between her and the car next to her so I could pull up at the empty pump on front of her. I'd been waiting about three minutes for her to drive off. I pointed out that I'll be done in less time than she made me wait by doing her hair![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

If you were washing your car and dropped the sponge onto the floor into dirt and grit, would you pick it up and wipe it straight back over the car?If not, why not? After all, there’s gravel on roads right?

This is the main reason I was so confused by those queuing. I suspect many may not be able to read English.
One has to wonder if there is a link between this behaviour, the inability to merge in turn and joining the motorway, slamming over to the centre lane and then slicing across to exit? It would seem plausible?Triumph Man said:

It depends on the car. Lots of cars are easy to fuel on the "wrong" side simply by holding the pipe.My mate was made up when Tesco introduced pay at the pump: he could refuel his Land-Rover without leaving his seat!
I used to fuel my horsebox at a garage that only had one diesel pump, a repurposed paraffin pump next to the shop, rather than in the centre with the petrol pumps. As the filler was on the right the only way I could reach the pump was to reverse in from the entrance and leave the same way. I was always getting flashed/honked at by drivers who were peeved that I was leaving via the entrance.

I spend a small fortune on trying to keep my cars looking reasonably tip-top, see my Reader Rides. I do reasonable miles with them and would loose my s

I've seen quite a few people with vans try to fill up from the "wrong" side. A lot of vans seem to have the filler behind the passenger door, and the door has to be open to open the flap. Presumably this saves a couple of quid when the van is made, but it does mean that most hoses won't reach. Close door, get back in, drive around and try again from the other side.
Some have a novel solution though - leave both doors open, pass the hose through the van and out the passenger door.

I assumed they did that because vans tend to spend a lot of time in areas where people steal fuel? Some have a novel solution though - leave both doors open, pass the hose through the van and out the passenger door.
I'll fill on the wrong side when driving a s
tter.
On a decent car I'll generally wait for a filler side pump to be free.
The hose certainly can and probably will scratch the paint if it connects. When parking on the wrong side and a decent distance away from the high pump kerb (which could connect with the door when open) this doesn't usually leave a lot of hose length, often resulting in not being able to get the nozzle correctly angled in the filler neck.
