What is happening at EVO magazine?
Discussion
Somewhat nonplussed by the GT2RS article.
They yearn for a car that tries to kill you even though that isn't how cars are these days and then conclude it is the return of the wonderfully bad 911 turbo that can take it to anybody and give it 4 1/2 stars.
I guess it is evident people don't actually value what evo says any more. Which is a shame - been reading since issue 1 like many on here. I used to have a copy in the smallest room in the house and it would take a good while to read, unlike now where 20 minutes does it cover to cover.

Indeed. Time was that a copy of EVO would last the entire month of poo-time reading. ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Get in from work and there it is on the doormat waiting for poo-time.
But yes, come to think of it I do tend to find they can be over all too soon now.
Anybody else finding that when you ring Dennis Publishing with any queries nobody has a clue what they are doing?
I renewed by subscription over a month ago, received a letter saying that my first issue would be the 29th November one (issue 243 I believe) but to date I've still not received it!!
When I called them they first of all said that I hadn't paid and then said they'd taken it twice and would refund me. A call to my bank revealed that they had taken 1 payment on the 28th October.
When I asked about issue 243 they said they would look for it around the office!! What, my one or just one kicking around??
I'd going to cancel and buy it from the newsagents!!

I remember buying the first issue which had the Maserati 3200 on the cover and was impressed for quite some time so I subscribed. Then I decided to unsubscribe and the person over the phone got really edgy like I had done something seriously wrong.
Now I can barely flick through it when at WH Smith due to the constant German car/McLaren features nowadays.

As I mentioned previously, I cancelled my Direct Debit earlier in the year, just after it had debited for an additional 6 months) and I'm guessing that 6 months is up now as the current issue has not arrived.
I've not had any communication about it at all - nothing saying "we think there may be a problem with your Direct Debit" or "we noticed you cancelled your Direct Debit. Would you like to pay for your subscription some other way?" or "have you left us? Don't go!"
But, nothing. It's like they just shrugged and went "oh well". Or have their system set up to auto-unsubscribe anyone whose Direct Debit fails.
In a way it's just as well, as if they'd contacted me I might possibly have wavered and stayed another 6 months.![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

Just cancelled my subscription after many years of reading. It's just the same-old, same-old virtually every month now, and there's only so many predictable rave reviews about Porsches/McLarens/Lambos etc that I can stomach. It's a long time since I looked forward to each month's issue.

Yes, I thought similar. The thing that really got me about that article though was the quote they chose to highlight on page 58. It's a bizarre metaphor as firstly what the hell is a "military spec alsatian"? Secondly, surely a military spec alsatian would be very well trained and controlled? They yearn for a car that tries to kill you even though that isn't how cars are these days and then conclude it is the return of the wonderfully bad 911 turbo that can take it to anybody and give it 4 1/2 stars.

But to put all that aside it's the absolute epitome of cliched "helmsman journalist" b

I had exactly this when I let my DD lapse. No contact, nothing. Consequently, I've not read another Evo since and I don't feel like my life is worse for it.I've not had any communication about it at all - nothing saying "we think there may be a problem with your Direct Debit" or "we noticed you cancelled your Direct Debit. Subscribed from the very early days but have just cancelled. I know the cost is hardly significant, but the reality is that I am spending less and less time reading it due to having already read several reviews of the cars they feature before the magazine comes out. I’ll miss the group tests, but even they are few and far between these days.
Is it that a) we're getting older or b) cars are just less interesting?
I saw a yellow 08 plate Megane RS today and just thought what a cracking car they were. I'm guessing that era of cars has gone (ditto the V10 M5, 993 RS, the whiney supercharged Cooper S first Gen etc) and so has a lot of the interest in quick cars.............?
Without Google, I couldn't tell you what the latest Megane actually looks like. I really don't know.

A combination of both. Every Focus sized car looks the same - Megane/Astra/C'eed/i20/Auris. Designers think a few sharp creases and wahay! a brand new monobox.I saw a yellow 08 plate Megane RS today and just thought what a cracking car they were. In Ye Olden Dayfs you had Lambo/F40/959 as supercars, now every Tomasz, Richard & Harold produces one. If you work in London like me, you see so many supercars, that the headturner isn't a Pagani, but a Escort Mexico or Lancia Delta of my youth.

I don't really think it's (b). There's more special Porsches than ever, loads of fast saloons, new Alpine, Alfa Giulia, Lexus RC, more hypercars coming, Fiat Spider etc...A bit of (a) probably, but I feel there's been a real loss of talent - Henry Catchpole being only the most obvious example. The writing isn't there, the pictures aren't there, and it doesn't reward detailed perusal as it used to.
What really annoys me is that when it all goes away, sorry, goes online, people will say 'tough environment for print media', but to me it's the loss of talented writers that makes the magazine no longer seem worth buying.

I bought a copy of Octane a few years ago, and it was just so up its own arse that it put me right off and I didn't buy another.
I agree. Octane is like a car version of the New Yorker.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zfs5s-VQA0

That's just it for me. ANOTHER bloody 911. When I were a yoof, a special 911 was a 3.0 Turbo. You never saw one. RS Carrera? Good luck with that. In fact you just didn't see 911's on the road, or very rarely. I've no idea without looking it up, what any of the new ones are. GT3RS? I remember that one from a decade or so ago.In a Liam Gallagher/Spinal Tap moment I actually thought Fiat were going to make this; I was disappointed to find they aren't and that it's the work of a stylist who just about every car manufacturer should be employing.
