Exactly. You were happy before you realised you had swirls. Your life has just got more complicated. hehe

I just wished that I could get the windows sparkling clean. I've tried so many different products and technics and always think that I have done a great job until I am driving into the sun and can suddenly see all the blotches on the inside of the windscreen !
Use garage therapy glass cleaner and a waffle weave microfibre towel - sorted!
Yeah. The waffle weave cloth seems to be the secret. Works a treat with any of the glass cleaners I've used.

I can’t wait for the East Europeans to reopen the local wash in a couple of weeks. It costs £6 and no bucket & sponge effort required from me.

I'm not a fanatical detailer but I can't stand the swirls and on a dark metallic paint it looks horrific.

So its.. (with Nilfisk pressure washer)

  • Rinse
  • Bilt Hamber Surfex HD - leave for 10 mins / Or Meguires Snow foam
  • Bilt Hamber Auto wheels - leave 10 mins
  • Rinse
  • 2 bucket Wash with Meguires Gold + Lambs wool mitt \ Brush \ agitate Wheels
  • Rinse
  • Dry - Woolly Mammoth
  • Optional - Polish Poor boys Black hole
  • Wax - Meguires Carnauba Waxs
  • Detailing spray - Meguires Quik Detailer As needed Glass etc
I can normally do a "maintenance wash" In just over an hour. The polish is once a year and adds an extra hour. Will treat myself to a DA polisher.

As stated earlier in the thread, it's the second biggest purchase you'll make. Why wouldn't you look after it? I think that goes doubly if you lease it or it's on PCP, the horror stories I've heard about excessive "charges" on return of a lease car were shocking (£2.5k!)

I have never used a £2 sponge to clean my car and i am not super anal on car cleaning. In the same way i don't use a dish-washing sponge. You simply don't want to scrub grit into the paintwork and a mitt is much easier anyway. Puzzled. The two-bucket thing is more recent but before that I just hosed the mitt before every panel. Having said all this I am OCD.

Agreed. As it happens we outsource all of our ironing in our household. You'll never catch me doing a moment of gardening. Any DIY more complex than hanging a picture and I'm paying someone.

But I'll never, ever, let anyone else clean my cars.

It's a matter of personal preference and how you wish to spend your time.

How long does it take to reach the point where the paintwork becomes worth cleaning?

It took 50 years to get it looking like that!

I do find it very bizarre the number of PHers that think that anyone who CBA to either clean their own car or do their own servicing is lazy.

Personally I hate doing those things, but did spend last weekend steam bending ply for a new desk for myself. Does that mean I can call anyone who doesn’t build their own furniture lazy?

I love Wab-Sabi like this ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi).
Even though I like a clean car, I don't mind the odd dint and scratch or blemish as long as they don't lead to rust.

It's just shorthand for "My own ignorance means I can't comprehend when other people make different choices to my own, but I'll judge them anyway."

Another example of hidden meanings is "Life's too short". Which really means "It's not a priority for me personally and unfortunately I lack the ability to appreciate why others might feel differently".

Life's too short in my opinion to waste in pubs, watching football or playing golf, but I can totally appreciate why many people make time for such things even if they're busy. Me, I'll be washing my car instead smile

If it's nice enough to be outside washing a car there's dozens of things I'd much rather be doing instead outdoors.

Well said.

As per earlier in the thread, I fall into the camp of "I care but I hate washing cars".

That said I just spent a load of money on products the other weekend as the Mrs was about to wash her car with fairy liquid and a cheap sponge for washing dishes. nono

Dish sponges are great for doing the wheels, especially the white scourer sponges designed for doing non-stick pans.

Not really, it keys the lacquer and makes the next load of brake dust stick even better.

Yeah better off with some wire wool.
