And on that sort of price...not exotic at all but just came across this-

Nothing especially exciting (regular 3 series for those you can't be arsed to click) and high miles but haggle that down closer to 2k and that looks like a cracking daily given it's clearly been looked after.
That's a bargain if it checks out, even at the asking.
That looks like a great car - I bought a 55 plate 330i SE on 107K miles last April, but paid a bit more than that!

Although mine did come with a 2nd set of wheels with winter tyres.

And it has proved to be a great daily driver.

So does that one.

Looks a steal to me. Unfortunately my unequivocal rule about saloons being useless compared to an estate means I have to pass.

Pointed that car out to my Dad 3 weeks or so ago.
It's an absolute steal.
Got at least a pair of decent quality tyres, clearly looks well loved.
Manual, 3.0, straight six.

Nice car

Such a shame the owner has had it 30 years and hardly driven it at all.

Fantastic.

A manual CSL would have been a serious option for me back when i was looking to buy a GT3 but the SMG made it an immediate no. A manual CSL is pretty much the perfect driver's-car-with-back-seats.

I thought the back seats were just some bits of foam glued onto the shell.

Cheap. Loved my auto touring. Extra wheels/tyres and suspension bits are a good chunk of the asking price on that one plus it's had the important stuff done already - stat etc. As above, if it was an estate....

That is the CSL I would want too
A car you could go on holiday to Europe in and enjoy the mountain roads cool

I assume it's fairly straight forward as you would swap the normal M3 bits onto it - clutch, flywheel, pedal box, prop, etc and away you go.

It's the same gearbox I think? Same clutch. Need to take off all the SMG actuation and control kit, shift paddles, probably needs recoding to switch from SMG to Manual. Pedal box, gear linkage and shifter, steering column shroud (ETA, that's also the same) etc.

When I enquired some time ago the quote was enough to put me off so I bought a CS. The numbers being suggested now are much more tolerable.

Not sure how many of the 422 remain. And of the remainder, how many are "good"? bastardised CSL vs fettled M3 and much money in the bank.

Certain aspects of the CSL are hard to replicate, but not sure I'd miss them.

I didn't realise that. A big of googling and it looks like they're still useable.

I always found the SMG really suited the whole nature of the CSL. I wouldn’t have particularly wanted a full manual in it

They actually weren’t too bad to travel in with a pillow behind your back, the main problem being the hard shell-backed driver and passenger seats made it a bit uncomfortable for your legs. Very easy to mark with your shoes on the way in and out

Or if you don't need back seats maybe a Z4MC would work?

I bought mine just before Christmas!

Agree a 100% - the CSL was designed to take the game to the 996GT3 on track and beat it, which it did rather convincingly when it did “that” 7:50lap of the Ring. Part of the appeal of the CSL is the SMG.

I am sick to the teeth of the media rubbishing the SMG. When properly set up it is an absolutely brilliant system. Easily the best robotised manual - better than the rubbish Magnetti-Marelli found in F430s, F599s and various Maseratis.

What this guy has done is akin to me wanting to put a PDK in my 996.1 CS because it shifts faster than the 6-spd G50 based unit. But it’s his car, so I don’t blame him...

As factory car, that's great. But, wouldn't a breathed on E46 M3 be as effective? And half the dollar.

I tend to agree that the SMG is nowhere near as bad as made out (well I would, wouldn't I haha). It is perfectly usable. I doubt the older SMGII would be that different.

It is not as snappy as a DCT or even a modern torque converter, but it does have loads of character and needs some technique to make the most of it. It has more sense of occasion than many modern gearboxes that try to disappear into the background.
