Mclaren F1 in big accident
Discussion
I think that was a joke about his mate interviewing rowan atkinson. That second photo doesnt look good!It looks like the rear end has taken most of any impact that has occured. That looks like a new chassis/tub to me.They arent a steel monocoque (=single tub for the thick in corsas, clios and volvos) that you can beat, cut bits out and weld bits on!Any structural damage will require a new chassis just like an elise!Supercars are strong? They are if you go in backwards engine first! If you hit a tree head on or sideways on with no engine in the front you may not be so lucky! Some publicicty stunt! If i had his money/lifestyle and someone suggested this as advertising for my new film?Go on have a big accident in youre rare supercar youve had from new for 13 years and try not to kill yourself!I know what he would have said to that!Rowan will know he was lucky! His insurance will fix it.Will it change him?I doubt it.Its just one of the risks you have to take if you like motoring and fast cars.Glad you werent hurt!
The police have interviewed him, but only as par of the course:
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said police officers spoke to Atkinson at Peterborough City Hospital but he has not been arrested.
He said: ''As is routine we spoke to the driver involved following the collision as anyone involved in a crash like this would be.
''The inquiry it it has finished and no arrests have been made.''

Im not sure that looks like the best way to load a £2million car onto a recovery truck? (though i'm not sure how else you do it?)![](http://thumbsnap.com/sc/o2FXVwnD.jpg)

I`d believe now that this was a rather unwanted incident.

Why are you still taking the piss? Martin 480 Turbo
I am still struggling with the idea you thought the accident could have been a 'stunt'
Quite bizzare.

Seems to be a standard technique when they no longer have all 4 wheels working/attached.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz3JM_OoilU
OK, I have just pulled out my copy of "Driving Ambition" the definitive text book on the F1 as I wanted to check out the structure at the back of an F1. Unlike a number of modern Carbon tubed supercars the F1 does not appear to have steal frames front and rear like say a Zonda onto which the sub assemblies like the engine and suspension are attached. In the F1 these parts appear to attach to the tub itself.
When Zonda's have crashed in the past the metal frames have taken most of the impact with little damage to the tubs. The F1 proved its crash worthiness when during testing the statuary crash test still resulted in the car being capable of being driven away as well the doors being able to open normally.
The F1 also has a massive exhaust box that was designed to act as a crash structure; this was well proven when a customer backed his car into a barrier at 300km/h with little damage to engine, gearbox or tub.
These latest photos would seem to indicate a rear 3/4 side ways hit as the engine and rear suspension are gone.
Will it be repaired? Yes I think it will. Current values are now so high it would not be in the interest of the insurance company to write it off.
Also have we heard from Flemke on this subject yet, his recent experience with his own car would be most useful?

Have only just been able to view the recovery pics (thanks work!)
They are here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2022680/Ro... if you were having the same problems.
Is the engine still in the car??
Everything looked so much better when I could only see the original pic!
Glad he's ok though.

The Mail there stating that the car was taken away today, so presumably it was left there overnight? Not sure I'd want my £2m car left at the side of the road like that overnight!
Lets be honest, if you can afford an F1 a few hundred pounds spent on someone to watch over it for the night wouldn't be noticed.J4CKO said:

Why would Northants be talking to him when it happened in Cambridgeshire?
From the first post,"It's currently on Twitter that a Mclaren F1 has been involved in a big accident on the A605 in Northants. Apparently Rowan Atkinson lives nearby so lots of speculation that it is his."
As the kids are not at school at the mo, we aren't driving that road every day (thankfully)

If you're on the A605 heading towards Peterborough there's a crawler lane up Haddon hill. The road then narrows after it's crested the hill before you get to the services. The accident happened just after the crest of the hill on the Peterborough side.
From the pics it looks like he was heading back towards Oundle, perhaps he clipped a white line under power and span across the traffic? It was very wet around here last night around half seven.

Apparently Rowan has just been discharged from hospital. I wish him all the best and hope that he's fully recovered in time for Goodwood Revival. Although it looks bad, I'm sure his car will be repaired, as I've known other rare cars to be rebuilt from little more than a chassis plate before. It will, however, take some time and no doubt cost a fair bit.

I seem to remember a car designer once saying that carbon fibre reacts very badly to fire (more so than other materials) Can't see any way it could be rebuilt, more bolt a couple of old bits to another car.
McLaren will repair that tub. They have dealt with worse fire damage.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
