I suppose it depends on the price.
I like the Golf, I like the styling.
I can't say the same for the hardened snot that masquerades as the A Class and 1 series so the Golf has no competition there.

If it is called REvo, will it play music videos as well?

2 recurring themes these days.

1) any hatchback with more than 300bhp must have 4 tail pipes?
2) anyone that buys one of these or other recent 'extreme' hot hatch will be branded a chav by at least a handful of PHers

i like it. except the damn tail pipes!

I have had many performance Golfs over the years, in fact my current Golf 7 GTi is a superb machine, well sorted and suited to daily driving and having a bit of fun. Bring on the ultimate 'R', at least the Golf will look so much nicer than the very UGLY A45 AMG and the BMW 135. Why are Mercedes so ugly at the moment…..

So you've driven one already then? rolleyes
4 cylinders = significantly more dull than more/different configuration, regardless of power.

I agree that generally they don't sound quite as nice as a six, but there are too many fuel economy, tax and emissions benefits to use anything else. Also it depends, as some sixes sound and feel duller than some fours, especially turbo fours.

They could have made another Golf R32 with the R36 engine, tuned to about 300hp (or a bit more if they added valvelift). Thing is it would have been technically worse in every way, and would have cost a lot more to run.
Plenty of manufacturers make six cylinder engines from 300-450hp, so there are still plenty to choose from. For a similar price to the Golf R or Audi S3, you can buy an M135i or M235i with fake engine noise. Sixes sound rubbish otherwise. biggrin

I've done 27k miles in my M135 in the last 10 months its got little or no sound to it frown
So whether is inline 6 or tranverse 4 make not difference to me
Has the R "evo" broken cover yet?
Might be a good replacement for my M135i?

I've not seen anything about it.

But, I think its too early. From a few articles the Mk8 golf will launch in 2017/2018.

If they do the Evo it will be a limited run near the end of the mk7 model. So maybe mid 2016 at earliest ? Announced later this year as a response to the Focus RS ?

Complete guesswork, it'll probably be announced next week now hehe
