If you draw a Venn diagram of people who do that, and of people who say "actually, it's a Union Flag, it's only a Union Jack when flying on an RN vessel", you get a single very grey, very flaccid circle.

Which reminds me of the "actually the V6 in the Mondeo/X-type is a Porsche engine" evangelists... Well... No, not really. Porsche do engineering consultancy, always have done ever since erm... the late 1930s...

Porsche were tasked by Mercedes with integrating a V8 into the W124 E-Class (see? Context. Make and model alongside the chassis code make it acceptable!), they even did the assembly, yet we don't claim the 500E is actually a Porsche. So Porsche advising on the design of a Mondeo engine does not make it a Porsche engine.

But the, Ford said, "Hello, Porsche, we'd like some help with a V6 we're planning," and Porsche said, "Here y'are, have this one. We've decided not use it," story is too good to ignore.

/never let the truth get in the way of a good story

You'll be telling us next the Aston V12 isn't two of them welded together.

C6 RS6, someone will always mention it having a Lamborghini engine despite it not being related to said engine.

.
Back in the day, Porsche helped with the first Seat Ibiza and plastered Seat by Porsche on it. The 1.5 inline 4 engine was unexceptional and I seem to recall was described as "harsh".

The advertising worked.

I just had a read about this, according to the Wikipedia (which is never wrong, obvs) article on Audi engines, the 5.2 V10 in the S6 was the basis of the Gallardo engine... So if you have an S6 the "It has a Lambo engine" mention isn't too much of a stretch (although it is more correct to say the Gallardo has a modified S6 engine). But not an RS6.

Any Alfa. Something to do with rust and/or dodgy electrics.

Any TVR. Always breaking down and/or smelling of glue. They don’t btw.

Well to a degree it is correct, they used the EA831 engine that was also used in the Audi 100 and the LT van however from what I understand they did use a different cylinder head on the Porsche.

To be fair, as brilliant as our Alfa was, it did hit both those points hehe didn't put us off buying a second Alfa.

The same Wiki article says about the S6 engine: ‘The V10 is based on the Audi 4.2-litre V8 engine.’ The Audi engine has a different bore and stroke to the Gallardo engine.

This was also true with the 4 1/4 Bentley, which led to the development of the Embiricos Bentley special, which is no bad thing!

Indeed. So much of this stuff is just ‘wisdom’ acquired from Clarkson, car jounos and pub bs.

Any Vauxhall "Oh, they're rubbish!". When you ask why you get "..... They just are". Oh right, glad you informed me. Doesn't matter how much you press, you get repeated vague statements that ultimately result in you knowing that the person you're talking to has attended the Church of Clarkson.
