FantasticI can think of better ways to spend £30k, but I'd love a go in that.
One for the lottery win garage.

Morning chaps.
I’ve been stalking this thread from afar for a long time, like a pervert hiding behind the curtains. It is a little haven of naturally aspirated, wafty politeness in a world of lunacy.
I’m finally in a position to join the clan having extended the garage to a size suitable to house a vehicle larger than a Tommy Tikes car.
Wifey has signed off on a 3rd car on the proviso that it is a convertible (fine), not too square (er, ok) and can fit the littluns in the back (hmmm). Offspring are small, so I’m thinking an r129 may suit although I’ll need to fit 3 point belts.
W124 ruled out on her second criterion so I’ve come to ask for some advice.
My obvious target is a SL500, but with spousal approval now attained, the search has obviously moved from ‘idle browsing’ to ‘Defcon 1 urgent’. I’ve seen a nice SL320 and also very nice 300sl - 24v. Are these poor alternatives to the v8? Will I forever by weeping inside every time I accelerate?
Surely what sir requires is the SL60?I’ve been stalking this thread from afar for a long time, like a pervert hiding behind the curtains. It is a little haven of naturally aspirated, wafty politeness in a world of lunacy.

Ultra sleeper which is absolutely epic, but 520hp and the original E30 suspension? You'd need to be very gentle with it in the wet. 520hp through a pair of what, 205 section tyres at most?
The issue is not when it lets go, but when it grabs hold again..... Really nicely done though.

R129 is fine for little 'uns in the back, up to about two hours unless you or they or both are especially substantial. I use mine with the kids (9 and 6) in the back all the time. Lap belts are designed to work.
Agree.A lap belt isn’t as good as a 3-point belt.
But then, absolutely anything built before 2000 isn’t as good in a crash as a 2018 Renault Clio, and we haven’t all dashed out for one of them.

This has pricked my ears up...not sure why, just has the 'look' I think...

It has the look of an engine bay basking in space. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-07-MERCEDES-BENZ-E...
Not a comparable vehicle, and over thread, but it has 2* the engine, a Passat CC 3.6. Low miles, and yes, you'd probably have a CLS instead.

Low miles, first rate MOT history, looks like it lives in a nice house too.
Unpleasant fuel though.

R129 is a good choice and although a 500 is nice don't rule out an SL320 in your budget you would get a nice car. For a long term purchase whereby your kids are growing fast, an A124 cabriolet would be a great choice having loads more room in the rear than the 129. I would go for the E320 as the E220 is a harsh engine that struggles in the cabrio W124.

Thanks - good to hear some real experience. Can’t imagine we’d be driving for any more than an hour or so with them. The search continues...

I had the same thought process and swapped a 129 for a 124 cabriolet. You’d only let your kids spend time in the back if you didn’t like them. cornershop said:

Good spot. Old enough for cheap tax, werthers enough to fly under the radar. Seats look lovely. Keenly priced with those miles too. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1199044
