Basic 1.2 Fiat 500 kitted out to look like a 595 Abarth including an engine change.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/fiat-abarth-1-2-turbo-c...

Unsurprisingly still down as a 1.2 on the V5 because of the £30 RFL rather than what it would be on an Abarth.
Knowing how much faff is involved doing a t-jet conversion and brakes, and interior, and air con', and so on it's hard to imagine that's not an Abarth with the 1.2 numbers added to it.

I replaced the engine in my MX-5 and got the snotty letter back from the DVLA demanding an engineer's report. I didn't use an engineer to do it and it has since passed it's mot. It's little surprise people aren't bothering, most conversions are done by enthusiasts who put great care into their cars and are cared for much better than most of the chavvy sheds on the road in my local area.
If it was a like for like replacement engine it should not have sent of any Welsh alarm bells. Even if it was a change of capacity from a 1.6 to 1.8 (N/A) MX5 for example. With the donor log book available to demonstrate it was the same make and model the DVLA should have been fine about it.

Unless it was a completely different engine or one from a later model where modified engine mounts would be required. Even then those mounts are widely available and you could have shown them the receipt to put an end to it.

I know of vehicles that have been scrapped because the DVLA wanted to know the ins and outs of a ducks behind. Pinto in a Ford Pop' and others. It all depends how much was involved with the conversion in relation to the Radically Altered Vehicle scheme.

I have always wanted to put a 13B in an N/A since my RX7 convertible was a bit too heavy for the rotary.

Reg check shows it as 1988cc so I guess that's what's on the V5C
yes

That info comes from the DVLA
I usually go straight to the DVLA...

https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dv...

...for V5C information and for MOT history information...

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

...to confirm mileage and so on.

Sterling effort and we all like a Q car but still a 1.8 Zetec on the log book so no (s)IVA and the MOT is a waste of paper.

Vauxhall Adam

1.6T VXR conversion upgraded to 240BHP, still a 1.2 on the V5C.

Loving the way it says "all the lights on the dash go out as they should" - as opposed to "all the checking and safety systems working correctly". But at least the lights go out wink

Oh and Cat D...

Someone tagged me on this when it was on Facebook. I asked the seller if the VXR was stolen. No reply.

An IN10 FPN is six points and £300 NIP and court date six points and unlimited fine. When insurance for a Fiesta ST for a new driver is ten times or more the FPN that's where the incentive lies.

Insurance fraud is one thing but if the DVLA haven't been updated for other reasons like the donor vehicle is stolen it's a can of worms that if opened could give you a criminal record for life. copjudge

Thanks again to...

https://www.facebook.com/UnusualCarsUK/

...for posting another illegal car with a possibly stolen engine, no (s)IVA and dodgy MOT.

Let's play Radically Altered Vehicle bingo.

Engine
Gearbox
Axle
Brakes
Suspension
Steering

"Fresh MOT"... toilet paper as it's based on the original identity.
..."and HPI Clear" because the HPI check would be the original engine number and not one that could be stolen from a BMW.

The engine swap might not have been declared because the Radically Altered Vehicle assessment costs money, or it could be a stolen engine, or they could just be too lazy to fill out a form. All of which lead to questions, if they want £15,000 for a car why not spend £500-600 getting it tested and registered properly? If the engine is legit why hide it? If they can't be arsed to fill out a form what other corners have been cut?

As always buy with extreme caution.

V41 KBV is still 1998cc on the DVLA Database.

Now the number plate should lead to this thread if anyone does a Google search for it.

In my other thread about the illegal sale of vehicle identities on eBay I set up a failed Petition to try and raise awareness of that issue.

Picture courtesy of the Gov website.

At the moment the engine number is not part of the MOT. So stolen engines, undeclared swaps for insurance and/or VED fraud and so on are not being recorded.

Would a Petition to Parliament to simply add an engine number check to the MOT be a way forward? If the number does not match the DVLA Database (V5C) or the number has been damaged, removed or tampered with the vehicle could fail the test immediately and be ordered off the road.

What do you guys think?

Thats the problem. Engine numbers rarely visible these days.

That's true. Also modified standard engines can look just as out of place. For example I had a 325i inlet manifold on my 320i and it was hard to tell if it was a 325 engine or not.

If they were to check for tampered with, damaged or removed engine numbers in a situation where it is hidden by half a ton of plastic it could be as problematic as seeing if the numbers match.

As for MOT testers not knowing where the numbers are and having to have an unlimited knowledge base. Most road vehicles have owners manuals that have a picture of the engine number location. Failing that unless they have a Nokia 3310 they can use Google. wink

Criminals don't like informants so it could be a potential issue as soon as they put the reason for failure on the MOT database it would appear on the ANPR database and the Police would be interested when they get a notification.

And the ringer Mini on "Salvage Hunters Classic Cars" where they simply retrofitted an engine number from a Mini Copper A series on to a much later A+ engine. You would have to be a specialist to spot it.

Periodically. Sometimes it's a car I like the look of but it's scrap for the sake of a stamp. I know people who have bought an undeclared swap and lost the lot when they tried to register it and the donor turned out to be stolen. I know others who have been hit by uninsured drivers because they are driving illegally.

Everyone who does engine conversions and gets them registered properly are being spat on by the Oxygen wasters who are too thick to fill out a form and if you're any kind of enthusiast that must get your back up.

Still registered as a 1.6

£34,000 (reduced from £38,000 already) is a lot to lose if the donor parts turn out to be stolen.
