MarJay.

Good points. Garlick & Riggers are still here - read their stuff smile.

The whole debate around Chris Harris joining is fascinating - fascinating enough for a rare post by me.

I have never met Chris Harris so he could be a complete tool or totally sound, but I like the articles, the vids, the fact he isn't afraid to drop his own wedge on stuff - interesting stuff - and engage with a bunch of judgemental unwashed such as we are on motoring forums. He doesn't have to.

I don't like the fact he can indulge his passion and absorb a gazillion car factoids whilst driving fast cars regularly and constantly improving his craft, where I have had to move from being a teenager equally stuffed full of car factoids and heeling & toeing my Shimano DX thumbies into the next 90deg left on some singletrack to being a middle-aged father of two needing his limited brain capacity for not-as-interesting work & other such cranial bollo.

So damn you & well done in equal measure Chris, I am quite jealous of the career you have created over the years. I shall continue to live vicariously through your exploits and best of luck in the new gig.

Hello Chris,

I am new to pistonheads and I log in on this site because you arrived here (as PH hopes and espects many more will do) The fact is I follow you since the Drivers Republic opening. I am a huge car enthusiast, and my two dream cars are a GT3 (even a 996 ph1 will do the trick) and the track focused caterhams. I have just ordered one with a similar scheme to you (but I did it before you do !) thanks to a LOA on a brand new Superlight european model 120bhp version. (Road legal Caterhams are really expensive in France) for 500€ per month. (but I am 25) It was my dream since I am 12 and I am (maybe excessively) proud to make it true (on my own).

I wanted to ask you something I feel about car journalism in our european environnement. Sports Car fans in Europe, especially in UK and France no more buy sports cars. They only dream of them. Sports Cars brands sell more magazines and revues than cars to the european people. Chineses and Russians now buy their cars. When you look at the last Lotus global sale results versus UK new lotus registrations it appears that UK lotus fans represents around 10% the turnover of Lotus in 2011. So in magazines we are dreaming on cars that are made for emergent markets because it is over there they sell. This is mainly why I can no more read paper car magazines.

2.0 internet car community is rising then. And it is great to see great car journalists like you interested in internet communities. I saw drivers republic with animated PDF articles as the future of interesting motoring journalism and I was really disapointed to see it closed and you returning to paper. Happily the videos survived. Now you are back on the net with PH and DRIVE. This is exciting !

And you know what ... I would have kept reading press magazines I would never have bought my Caterham ... Internet communities gave me this courage and faith in my dreams. And I wanted to buy it brand new to give directly to Caterham, for them to continue to produce cars to real enthusiasts.

Welcome to Chris on PH and I wish all PH readers an happy new year.

Sylvain de France

Having read and watched Chris' copy and vids during his stints with Autocar / DR / EVO, it's a sizeable coup for PH to have enlisted his services.

FWIW, and this is IMVHO, I just hope that he's allowed the scope to express his musings as he was in DR and EVO. I always thought that the little column afforded in Autocar was a disservice to his writing talents, and that his subsequent vids at DR and the reviews in EVO clearly allowed his motoring passion to shine.

So, again FWIW Chris, welcome aboard and I am totally shallow enough to admit that my favourite Harris vids are the DR one on skidding an M5, and the Autocar one doing 227mph in the Veyron.

Brand new here, but I've developed not only a great respect for Chris' driving and ability to write and act, but also for his ability to engage in forum discussions. Typically he adds a bunch more of relevant information to the post (like when I criticized him for not using enough opo in his Countach drift), while also holding his beliefs.

I'm a huge fan of cars, and I think a good litmus of whether or not a motor journo is worth their weight in salt is if you regret the time you spend reading their work once you've read their stuff. In my experience it's usually so far the oppositethat I'll spend extra time looking for another article in hopes it would be more like his (meaden, and bovingdon, and Sutcliffe are included in these sentiments as well).

Seems like a great group of guys, and if you've already figured out from my boring vocabulary and lack of whit, I'm an American (Portland Oregon to be precise), and must say if only more Americans shared both the passion and appreciation for the finer aspects of motoring.

Chris,

I haven't been able to email you thus far (can't work out where to find your email address - suspect it's well hidden for a reason cop), so consider this post as me contacting you like you requested. Email me through my profile when you get a chance and glad you liked Stan or, as it's now called, Chris. Cheers.

P.S. If you don't get back to me I probably really will kill myself. Think about that. hehe

David,

Have passed on your email address to Chris. Apparently some "free Porsche tat" will be on its way to you shortly. Obviously with a thorough wipe down of the envelope first, should you have harboured any notion that you'd be able to take a swab of DNA from it and recreate your very own Chris Harris in some sort of sinister underground stalker DNA replication laboratory. smile

Just because you want to mub him to within an inch of his life, you can't judge everyone by your own malevolent perverse standards.

hehe Cheers, Stuart. I promise I won't try and clone him. Well, not until I have finished building my 'retaining cage', anyway.
