really.
Being able to see the engineering due to lack of body panels isn't overwrought?
The fact that a certain look as been obtained through aerodynamics and cooling along with a free flowing stylus is a GREAT thing!
None od the body panels take twists and turns that aren't needed... no unnecessary shut lines...

No, because the OEM clusters were designed to a specific BMW styling trait. Look at all BMWs from the mid 2000s onwards and you'll see it in most of them.
Yes, I'm perfectly aware of that. What I am saying was that their design language was wrong, and it took some entreprenurial aftermarketeers to put it right.
I think this is one of the problems with modern car design.

Marques place too much emphasis on "design language", and try to use the same styling tricks on every model in their range, rather than styling each on it's merits.

There are several cars where the styling quirks (or corporate nose) look right on one model, and very wrong on others.

This is not a recent thing. Go look at the front of a 1996 Audi A3, Audi A4, Audi A6 and an Audi A8.

All virtually identical...

Or even a Mk2 Granada / Mk5 Cortina. (Yes, I know, technically a 'Cortina 80')

To summarise, every car that has been on sale for over ten years looks at least a decade old if not more.
This thread in a nutshell
Admiteddly, I didn't realise the XJ8 was a 30 year old design

That'll be why racing cars seeking to squeeze out every gramme of performance have all these features then? Oh - wait...

Completley agree. E46 still looks damn good. Nothing since does.

I think the new Jag XF already looks dated: the featureless side panels, heavy handed glazing surrounds, mismatched front and rear, the XE doesn't fare much better either.

As a Jag owner, I'm not feeling the love for the XE or New XF yet.

Jag do like the pure surfaces and not the creased surfaces that have blighted Mercs and BMWs , but the new XF has lost the Jag characteristics.

The controversial, kidney grill for me is what really ages the 3 series of that generation.

Looks like a Modeo ( fine value at a year old, not knocking them) but as colleague said " that's because it is one".

It's a Mondeo in the same way that it's a Rolls Royce Phantom, a DAF tractor unit or a Thwaites dump truck. I.e. Not at all.

The original XF was when Jaguar lost Jaguar characteristics. Everything since could have come from Japan or Korea.

I've just ordered a new XF as a company car purely because of it's clean lines and lack of silly surfaces. Far too much fussy detailing with most cars these days, I find it very elegant personally.

The latest line up of jaguar sedans do seem to be designed for those who are below senior management
I can tell that the modern line up of Mercedes coupes and sedans are going to age very badly, but i also think that the
modern trends of car design will be seen as vulgar in the next ten years
