It is well known the F1 didn't achieve the planned number of sales. Hence it being made into a racing car which wasn't in the original plan.

Don't get that, that's like saying Aventadors never sold well.
I don't think they've been the success BMW were hoping and the Lambo is three times the price.
Can you share some light on the projected sales figures vs actual? Or where are you coming to this conclusion from?

List price is £105,000 for the i8. In nobodies world is that going to be a mass market car. Let alone that it's a coupe, so limited use and more niche and electric/hybrid so more niche again.

Looks like BMW have sold over 1600 of them in 2 years or so in the UK according to here:
https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/bmw_i8
Article on sales in the US claims they sold just 190 a month in 2015, compared to 2300 Tesla Model S. Total sales for 2016 for the whole of Europe were around 2000 i8s.

To be fair, the Tesla Model S is cheaper, and is a four door saloon so competes in a different market than a sports car.

Completely agree, it's a bit like saying Ford sell more Fiesta's than Mazda does MX-5's... therefore the MX-5 doesn't sell well.

I couldn't see any mention of this on Wiki when looking, do you have something referenceable?

In the end, 106 F1s were produced and of that total only 64 were pure road cars as originally envisaged by Murray.

Would you say 2000 i8 sales across the whole of Europe in a year is a success?

The distinction is fairly irrelevant - Vauxhall is the name in the UK for those cars. As such most would recognise the meaning of the statement. Vauxhall would be recognised by more UK residents than GM, so really it's less helpful to describe it as GM

I don't know. I would compare it against 911's, Vantage's, R8's etc. I would also expect lower sales than any of those as it's a more niche product.

But it's due to be launched isn't it? And Alpina have soon stepped up with an F90 and F91 B5.

Audi A2 never sold very well did it?
The A2 was a brilliant car and in many respects is far better than anything Audi offers now. The issue was they were "witheringly expensive" when on sale. They were almost all alloy, rode well and very economic. I think they still look good... just Audi's greed stopped them selling.

Before reading this thread I didn't realise they did a mk6 golf r convertible. Can't recall seeing many of any mark of golf convertible over the years.

Surprisingly only seen one evoque convertible, I'd have thought they'd have sold in greater numbers. Hateful looking thing, should never have been realised.
