Smart cars - "I wouldn't want to crash one". Usually with a picture of that Fifth Gear crash into a concrete block.

The statement that gets up my goat is when someone shows a pic of a mangled vehicle and there is always someone with zero imagination comes off with...

IT WILL BUFF OUT, I absolutely hate that comment....

Agree with this, in a similar vein when a car is destroyed by fire. ‘Gutted for you’

....just like we enthusiasts like throwing engineering terms around with no actual understanding, because journalists use terms like slippy diff, cross-plane crank or bonded carbon composite in their copy.
And to be pedantic, most of the time when people refer to slippy diff, they mean one that isn't as slippy as a normal open diff, making the term a little odd.

Landcruiser - the Taliban. Though I almost didn't deign to reply due to the OP's woefully misguided taste in films.

They're pretty much shed money now aren't they?

A lot of those problems are going to be down to neglect / running them on a shoestring until something breaks

Platform sharing does bring out some amusing and odd comments... I suppose you could say the same about the Porsche Cayenne, as it shares the platform and the basic powertrain with the V8 Q7 and Urus.

If someone mentions the posh variant there's always someone who will grumble "it's just an X in a frock", or if someone is very pleased with the budget version "it's basically a Y without the badge". Meh, I'd happily buy a Skoda version of the Urus with a 4.0TT V8, if it costs what the Skoda version should cost. Not sure I'd bend anyone's ear about how it's a Urus wearing sack cloth though. biggrin

BMW rider to BMW car driver: "I didn't know they made cars now"

That one never gets old. First usage I can remember was in the 80s when a friend of mine had a snooty BMW driver stop next to him and express distaste at my friend devaluing the BMW badge on his motorcycle (thinking it a fake). Showing amazing ignorance of the brand he was actually driving. This was before all the c**** left their BMWs and started driving Audis (to paraphrase TG).

I still hope to run into an old pilot who will say to a BMW rider "I didn't know they made motorcycles now"

I haven't come across 'are you a freemason', more 'Arthur Daly car' or 'Pub landlord car'. When I first got mine quite a few people asked if it was my dad's, but that hasn't happened for a long time now unfortunately.

My grandad had a SEAT Malaga when I was a kid, a booted Ibiza. One of the rarest cars we only ever saw one other.

But..... Porsche engineering proudly marked on the cam cover. I used to love to tell my friends "it's got a Porsche engine!" not knowing any better at the time that it meant very little. Porsche even designed the engine mountings for the Skoda 1.3 Ohv when the Favorit came along, but as a kid it was a boast.

Overly pedantic really. Originally Svenska Aeroplan AB (Limited Company), it became Saab Automotive AB when branching out into car manufacture.

Saab seem to refer to themselves as such https://www.saab.com/ but the car badges were all badged SAAB, it's true.
