Well... I was young once and was a proper menace in my Mk1/11 Mini's, straight through systems made by my own fair hands. Flames out the tail pipes the works, 20 foot long jumps off flyovers whilst maybe speeding. So 40 odd years on and not a lot has changed other than that I do behave in town and I despise others with the pop bang overrun stuff when walking my dogs. Frankly there are bigger issues in the world than aftermarket systems and someone in their 20's being a menace. We can't all grow roses, play bridge and drive a Tesla.
Before someone fries me I don't condone/support it but conversely it is a business for someone and an interest for someone else, and a big business. What else to do with their money? It can develop into a serious car addiction.... sound familiar?
Be sensible, not an arse. Simples.

No it would sound utterly st, and mark you out as a selfish cretin.
Read my whole second paragraph.
But he's still right about the perception others would have...

To me a IL4 sounds sh!t. And it’s normally these power rangers who give bikers a bad name with their exhausts and riding style. That’s a broad statement I know, but it’s what I see where I am in Derbyshire, and of course more so on a Sunday Matlock way. Which I try avoid like the plague.

A V twin is a lovely thing to have between your legs. This air cooled Ducati lump sounds great, even in EU5 guise. I know bikes are divisive, but If engines are your thing, then a bike can’t be bettered with that close connection.

But back on topic. I was speaking to a big aftermarket parts supplier for bikes. The powers that be are indeed clamping down on selling exhausts in particular. And it’s the supplier they are going for, and they will receive a fine. I believe this seller is now asking the buyer to sign a disclaimer stating off road use only.

Manufacturers are, quite rightly, getting wise. I have no idea how Ducati have got away with selling Termignoni race pipes on brand new bikes. Even more so also mapping the emissions control out of the bike.
Arrow are now selling fully road homologated systems with catalyst, and this is the route il be going.

because, for all the jokes we have about ze Chermans following orders, we Brits love to follow rules - our continental cousins are a little more relaxed in many areas (ironically car mods is one area where the Germans are insanely strict)

The authorities are clamping down because bikers have been taking the absolute wee wee.

We moved out of London a few years ago but used to live on a 30mph A-road. Technically we should never have heard a bike passing our house. In reality it sounded like we had a roadside seat at the Isle of Man TT weekend. All times of the day and night we had 'superbikes' haring past at 90mph.

And people say things like it is only a small number of idiots who ruin it for everybody else but I'm not so sure.

We heard the bang when this one happened a few doors down:

biggrin

Sums it up nicely. Why is that any worse than an actual P&B remap? You want banging and popping noise? You got it! Ok, it lacks volume.

Who ever did the map on this Ibiza should be fined! Utterly embarrassing!

Misha's facial expressions shows it all!

I honestly don't know how you can drive down the road with it all going off!

I normally a firm member of the "...please leave us alone to enjoy our cars brigade..." seeing some of the brain-doners on this video give credence to the various Karens complaining about car-shows frown

Absolutely awful, and the stupid suspension causing the tyres to rub. Utterly daft.

Over the years I have enjoyed a number of performance related remaps and I like a nice sounding exhaust note. Such cars don’t always need to be loud to be appreciated as they drive past, but on occasion a slightly louder exhaust note allows said nice noise to be enhanced.

Making something louder that wasn’t nice sounding in the first place , is like having Janice from Friends shouting Oh My God constantly in the middle of a cinema between verses of ‘I know a song that will get on your nerves’.

In the opening post, the legal issues seems to be more around the fitting of the decat (no debate needed on legality - unless you have been living under a rock for 20 years) and the deliberate inclusion of unburnt fuel as part of the remap (again, no debate needed on the emissions impact of unburnt fuel on the MOT) than it is about the exhaust note or volume itself.

From inside the car all these pops and bangs just sound like worn out suspension bushes.

From outside makes the driver look like a right phud.

It doesn’t turn a hatchback into an exotic.

Indeed, but it also makes it clear where the blame lies then.

I was watching this video last night https://youtu.be/XnLEtHxBako?si=LRj0R_xekPd9ZeP_&a... and the curious thing is that you're getting flames but no pops and bangs.

Thats just unburnt fuel being ignited by the high exhaust temps. To get pops and bangs you retard the ignition so the fuel is ignited in the combustion chamber as the exhaust valve is opening, so instead of the ignition generating downward pressure on the piston to generate torque, it's igniting the fuel on the exhaust stroke so you get no torque but you hear the bang as it ignites in the exhaust and turbo in an explosive event.

Oh I see. But only when they lift off? I'm not looking at getting the idiot remap btw.

My Porsche does this when decelerating from 3000rpm but it's more a distant rumble of thunder because I have a standard exhaust. My old TVR Chimaera used to do it, too, and was quite loud with its straight-through exhaust (cat in place).

My old Rx7 used to be like that, mainly due to the unburnt fuel - again it was totally silent.

Not as easy as that. I buy a car with undeclared mods (and no history as thar twuntish dealer has binned all paperwork in the name of data protection...) I'm then, potentially, screwed?
