It’s obviously very subjective. But when these first came out they I thought they looked really good. Now in the flesh that front end looks really dated for a fairly recent car. Someone mentioned the original cls. That’s the same for me, that looked fantastic when it came out, now the front end looks sad.

Great choice.
I thought these looked the business when they were new, but that front end just looks awful to my eyes!

“So many” - Model Y best selling car of any type, globally, IIRC in 2023, yes even more sold than the Toyota Corolla at 1.23 million units sold just that year

Model 3 - 600,000 sold in 2023
So that’s over 1.8 million units just from 2 models

Tesla - best selling electric vehicles of all time so they must be doing something right with the styling

To these eyes it looked terrible at launch.
I was told it was modern, ahead of its time. It's looks will make sense they said.
Nope...
Turns out it was just a terrible design that looks even worse today than it did 23 years ago!
I agree - its an ugly car that hasn't got any better with time.

But how many of those sales are driven by things like range / infrastructure / tax breaks versus people buying them because they think they're great looking?

Styling is clearly irrelevant, as proved by BMW's recent efforts laugh

Indeed. Tesla look cheap, sales usually are the result of a spreadsheet decision, not a heart over head decision.

They're miserable looking things.

EFA, practical cars bought for family duties.

The fact that it's predictable makes it even more depressing. OK I get some of them and there are obviously some great versions of the small German cars in the list but anyone buying these stupid little pretend SUVs like the "sportage" or any MG will be rounded up and interned when I seize power.

People have always bought the cars that fit the bill best for them.
These cars just happen to be the ones.
Not really something to get worked up about imho.

Just like the way that the small 3 box saloon was supplanted by hatchbacks, hatchbacks have been supplanted by crossovers. The surviving hatchbacks are now where a Ford Orion or Vauxhall Belmont or VW Jetta was in the early 90's.

EVs seem to be quite poor in my view. Teslas so generic compared to any ICE where they’ve actually made an effort (A110 perhaps excluded).

Nissan 350/370z (sorry if any of you have one) I LOVED these when they were launched but now (to me IMHO) they haven't aged well - especially the convertibles.
Never liked them.
I still like the way my 370Z Roadster looks, however I can understand why many wouldn't though. Plus generally the 350/370Z are very marmite cars anyway I think.

They look even more miserable inside than they do outside for me, so that is an achievement I reckon.

Two factors I would say. Firstly, Tesla's initial design language was meant to be inoffensive. They were selling the powertrain, not the looks, and anything interesting tends to be polarising. Secondly, aerodynamics. They get their class leading efficiency in part from being lower drag than their rivals.

They could have been braver, the shape they have still looks quite a lot like the shape you get when you have to accommodate a bulky engine somewhere. But then people don't like one-box designs, which would be more rational for an EV with a skateboard chassis.

I think the 370z is still good looking for this day-and-age. I think it's mainly because of the somewhat rarity of them, but coupled with the fact their styling is (IMO) very relevant.

Convertible though? Nah. They look awful on the 370.

I really liked them, I think such an analog V6 is a rare breed now.

The interior lets it down but I saw one for sale which has had the entire NAV and HVAC replaced by a tesla style screen and it looks sooooo much better.
