This isn't remotely dodgy:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2013-BMW-1-SERIES-F21-3-...

No, this won't result in a stolen car and some poor sod losing thousands when it gets 'found'.

How would you make it illegal? At what point is a car damaged "beyond repair" and who should decide where that line is? Would that be fair to everyone?

Kitchen knives chop onions. They also kill people. You can stop knife crime by stopping the sale of knives, but then we all need to eat ready meals.

It is a modern, knee-jerk reaction to crime to stop people doing things that could be criminal. It is a terrible trend IMHO.

That said, it is hard to say how there would be a legitimate use for this shell and logbook. As such, hopefully, there won't be much demand for it.

The insurance assessors generally, using a grading system which starts at 'repairable economically', goes through 'uneconomic repair' to 'no parts must be used'. Although (like everything) it has its critics, it's probably as good a system as any. VOSA (or whatever their latest title is)/ DVLA then check (if necessary) the repairs and/or identity before allowing back on the road. Unlike a knife, someone could be using a lethal car without any knowledge (ie bought without full knowledge of repairs involved) hence the checks. A good idea IMHO

VOSA/DVSA never at any time checked the quality of repairs it was only ever an identity check and this was stopped in October 2016. apparently in all the years the VIC check was in operation theu only picked up 4 ringed cars.

Which is fine so long as an insurance claim has been made. Which it has not been in this case. So how else would you make it illegal?

If they only picked up 4 ringed cars, they weren't very good. Dropping the VIC has given a green light to every ringer to carry on unhindered.

Ten years ago or so, there was a late model plastic bumper E30 318i Convertible on Ebay. Only thing was, it was on a 1987 E plate and a check of the VIN revealed the ID to be from a 1987 2 door 318i. A ringer, then.

I rang the Police and reported it. They went out to inspect it, rang me and said 'it's all legit. The VIN plate matches the logbook'. :roll eyes:

You fking could not make it up. Of course the fking VIN plate matches the V5.............the V5 doesn't match the car.

The black 1 Series should have been a Cat B break only. It's fked, look at it. There has to be some sort of conspiracy going on at the mo between insurance companies, bent assessors and salvage auctions as there are 1.) too many Cat D cars that are seriously damaged and need jigging and 2.) Cat C cars that are clearly scrap. Both are simply legitimised logbook donors and that 63 plate 116i will be back on the road in a month.

Oh, and Cat B stuff is being shipped out of the UK, pulled straight, repaired after a fashion by Eastern European artisans and fired back into the UK to be re-registered. A mate at Sytners has found at least one flood damaged Cat B whose new registration number doesn't match the original and further digging finds its true I.D. You'd think DVLA would pick up on the VIN, but it doesn't.

Yes, definitely a 1964 car.

No way is it a 1990's shell, no way.

So does posting ringers or kits on this thread actually have an effect or are we just showing our displeasure at the practice.

I have tried to report stuff to DVLA who singularly appear to not care about improperly registered or rung kit cars.

If what is reported here is worthwhile and the authorities are actually doing something with the info a little bit of feedback would be good.

The idea is to report them to eBay and Police Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service.

With a couple of screen grabs and supporting email.

https://navcis.police.uk/

eBay have been a bit slack of late so I'll be emailing them a polite reminder later. wink

it always helps reporting illegal things or make them public.

over the time authorities will become aware about it and/or dealers/sellers of such items become afraid.

imo even sellers / dealers names should be published...but unfortunately this is against this forums policy

...and some forum members throw their toys out of the pram, posts get deleted and I get emails from one moderator saying...

"Keep this up and you will be banned from the forum"

...and a follow up email from a more senior moderator...

"Sorry about that. He's new".

hehe
