This has prolly been posted before, but a good article on the top 20 most expensive UK private plates up to 2013. F1 and perhaps X1 are the priciest. VIP 1, at £285k, arguably the best on the top 20 chart:

Now that's a DVLA Auction number that sadly I don't think has increased in value.? Sold for £10,900 + VAT Etc back in March 2003...! And i Don't think it would make anywere near that today....
