944's 968's love these.
924's hmm not my cup of tea but they are good value but not a proper Porsche VW instead.

928's very nice

They will be never be as sought after or expensive as a 911 but I think the 911 market is full of overpriced dross and the front engined cars are suspiciously good value at the moment, the "Poor Man Porsche" keeps them cheap for those of us who like them, I cant really afford a 911 right now but not sure I am all that bothered about having one, I think now if I were spending a larger amoutn I would buy the best 944 Turbo I could find and modify it.

How do those who cite the "Poor Mans Porsche" thing cover the 928, as they were more expensive new but are cheaper than a 911 now ?
The 928 comment surely is aimed at the fact that you can pick up a 928 for a monkey now, regardless of what they once cost.

Aside from the aesthetics, the main thing for me is that the 924/944 cars dont really sound good. For me to buy a classic, its not about ability - but about emotion. And it sounds like a bag of spanners...

Do Classic cars need to sound good?

I'd say its a big plus but not the be all ad end all. I mean so many sound breathless at 4k revs rattly little under powered engines. But that would mean you should be buying super cars only which is not likely for most buyers due to rarity cost and practicality.

Some CC buyers would no doubt love a 6R4 where as others would love a Model T Ford or anything inbetween.

It doesnt have to no, but then it needs other redeeming qualities.
An amazing engine note alone is enough to sway many though, and perhaps a little bit of vice versa?

The 944 has redeeming qualities in spades, they are an utter, utter joy to thread along a country road and many people say that the 924 is even better.
So why arent they valued as such?

The 944 with its 50:50 perfect balance would make sense but the 924 doesn't have that quality so would have to be inferior not that you buy a classic car to drive it hard.

I'd have to question the logic of choosing a 924 over a Boxter I'd say both have hit the bottom of the price curve even though one is so much newer. But the newer one is drastically better in every way.
The 944 offers a bit of 80's cool and coupe as well as vert

If only that was true. They do rust, badly and will probably only become valuable when they are ultra rare and pristine low milers, same with 944's
Okay maybe that should have been don't rust as much as your usual suspects from the previous decades. Value and Valuable are two different things, Jensen's have value, but don't command anything like the price of a comparable Aston Martin.

The whole classic car for money making is a bad thing in the end though.

Cars increase in value beyond most enthusiasts capability to own (thought this does tend to mean the owners can afford to maintain them properly), worse, they are not driven or enjoyed, but packed away or just displayed.

There is a lovely 930 in a Glasgow museum stuck on the wall. Would love to get it down and thrash it.

no, I moved here, saw the price of cars- knew how much they were back in the UK and had shipping experience.

Didnt take long to put together.

First car was our old MGTF that was sitting in the garage, I paid 2250 gbp the week MG went bust for it (it was four years old). Wife used it for four or so years, sat in garage for a year, I shipped it (circa 3k gbp cost) and used it for another year before selling it for $19k (about 13k gbp)

This funded the next purchase and so on.

The 911 is currently up for $48k and I am getting interest so all good.

I spotted a cheap and very clean 924 yesterday in the right colour (guards red).

Must go & take a proper look tomorrow smile

I know this is twice the budget but caught my eye in a local dealers





Delivery mileage only so as it was when it left the factory. Now that is rare. Not suggesting it is a good investment but a unique opportunity all the same.

I don't get all the recent love on here for the 924. It always was and always will be the absolute runt of the Porsche litter.

My mum had a couple of them (Lux & S) back in the 1980s, which I used to occasionally drive. Too slow to be interesting. Too weedy-looking to be considered a classic on appearance alone. Even the steering felt disconnected and lifeless.

Do yourself a favour and save up a little more for a nice 944 S2.

this is mine- I am 6'5 and 17 stone.





however it is a squeeze unlike the Chimaera which has heaps more room. The old 911 isnt bad either but nowhere near as nice to drive (and I have an exceptionally good one)

and as soon as driven- its the same as every other Chimaera.

Mine only has 30k from new (1995), in exceptional condition and probably runs 10 times better. Also only cost 5k

How about a very tidy and totally original low mileage S1 Elise? Less than £15k, and values can surely only go up?
