The F40 is widely regarded as the best by plenty of folk so it's hardly 'a bit of a laugh'.
I heard it as being in CH's opinion anyway and seems to be an opinion shared by many.

A modern version, for me, would be the Noble M600.

Always loved the F40! I remember buying the Bburago 1:18 scale model in 1989 on a holiday in Italy as a 10 year old kid. I still have that model at home! I've been a fan since and have seen and heard them in real life many times. I don't think they sound that special, at least not compared to most V12 supercars. But the rest is just plain awesome! The Mclaren F1 might be a better car in almost every way, but I never really liked it that much for some reason. Mostly due to the looks, which I don't like at all. So probably the better car, but for me the F40 is still THE supercar.

As for the F50, I remember when it was released I didn't like it at all. Just seemed very ugly and on paper it wasn't any better than the F40 (performace figures are important when you're a teenager!). Over the years I've grown to like it. I still don't think it looks right, but the noise and the way it is built is very special. Must one of the most pure driving experiences amongst supercars.

i have owned mine for five years. prices have roughly doubled. i was thinking of selling. this film has reminded me just how special this car is. when mnine comes out of storage each april i can barely contain my excitement.

the challenge is to have what chris has with his 512TR in an f40 - to pile the miles on and just enjoy it.

I remember reading this edition of the magazine, many times, as a young lad:

ps. Fantastic film. Far better than the rubbish that is most of Top Gear.

FWIW, I'd have the F40.

I'll take the Lister.

Not really, but love the fact they pitched it against the F40.

Epic video. Truly. But I'd still take the F50 over the F40.

Fantastic video and cars! I was just arriving at Anglesey for a race weekend when they were going round...didn't realise it was Chris filming! at 12mins 30secs you can see my motor home in the background towing my MX5!

Noise was immense!

The comment 10:55 in while driving the F50 regarding Dave Piper...

i plan on watching the vid again tonight. is it me or is mr CH not sliding the f50 around nearly as much? Im guessing it was harder to evoke.

i love how he tells us that the f40 revs kept level will still push the car on as the boost kicks in... in other words, dont think you can drive this on a fast A road in the wet and feather the throttle on the way out the corner!

As much as I love the F40 the video I thought there was too much attention to sliding the car. The squealing tyres ruined the soundtrack.

Besides, there's only so much sliding I can watch till it bores me.

That was one of the few times I've watched a vid through to the end. Loved it.

I do wonder what the laptimes would be like over the years. Tyres improve, etc, so probably not a fair thing to do; doubt you could retest every car when newer rubber came out, so I dont know how much we'd learn from that, but I must admit I'm curious.

And where do you go from here monkey? You certainly tugged on my italian heartstrings; maybe a pagani family duel is in order? Lets see even MORE passion!

EVO magazine, take note.
This is how you review cars with video - old and new. Period.
Strange as I would suggest the recent evo video with the F40, Carrera GT, etc was a better video... more interesting with higher production values (and less camera shots of hairy legs wink ). But that's not to say this wasn't good.

As a side note it is interesting the F50 was rated higher than F40 in Evo video.

I'd rather see the oversteer porn on the open road. It's a bit more risque and a bit naughty biggrin
