For a 99gram car, EPS is a necessity!

And it's worth noting that the reason the latest 3 series for example is "less sporty" than the old one is because that is what the market is asking for. The number of people who want a comfortable, quiet, fuel efficient car now outweigh the number who want a hard riding sports model by a factor of at least 100. BMW (and merc, and audi, and JLR) know this, which is why they release their cars tuned in this way to suit this audience!
I want to agree and suspect strongly that you are right, but I can't shake the feeling that a substantial minority would appreciate a car that handled a bit better. I'm not even talking about trading off comfort against agility, because the 3 series and C class aren't even massively comfortable (more wallowy, really, which is actually quite an unpleasant sensation). Surely it's not beyond the wit of man (see current softish Porsches for example) to have a comfortable ride without giving up completely on handling!

A firmer set up with some compensating softness from a little more profile in the tyres would be good, but that's a fashion no-no!

I thought the current 3 series was a handling shocker until I drove a C class recently. I think it might be the worst handling modern car that I have ever driven, and I can't believe that less than 50 per cent of drivers would notice and think 'This drives like st'

I will say in mitigation to my earlier points, I saw the 'Jag' on the news, on the river Thames, and it looked rather smart from the front. I think I'll need to check one out in the metal..

I suspect there will be no more new mainstream cars released with hydraulic power steering.

Agreed; if not possibly the Merc slightly below the BMW.

That new C-Class has Stunning interior, rear end looks hideous.

The XE looks almost dated before its launched. Give it 6 months and the novelty wears off and it'll be in a need of a refresh.

I like it, perhaps not quite as pretty as I was hoping but still a nice looking car, hopefully a 5 litre v8 with a more sporty stance might fix that.

I definitely want to have a closer look when there in the showrooms

The current 3 and C class are not lookers, the C-class could have been a contender but for the rear styling. Couldn't say what the current A4 looks like, assume it is like the previous one and the one before e.g. blandness on four wheels. The Jag looks way better than its current generation of rivals.

Wow it only took Jaguar 20 years to catch on on this:

Mating it to a Toyota interior doesn't help it. Massively disapointed.

The C-Class will rule this segment the coming years. Pagani style fluidity
brought into mass market with an interior light years ahead of what Jag
is trying to sell. WTF ?

Catch on to making a red 4 door saloon? I'm sorry, but the XE bares as much resemblance to a Ferrari FF, as it does an Alfa 156. It is a car with wheels and doors. And is red. Epic 'it looks like' fail.

Look at the window aperture, the black highline, the way the rear wheels sit in the arches, the short high tail, the 1.5deg nose down rake, all classic M3 signatures that JLR have sensibly copied for their car!

OK I see your point. The details are very different though, in my defence!

What can we expect from the M3 rivaling version?

Will watch with interest....

Interior looks a bit disappointing.

The detail styling is really pretty tasteless IMO. Stupid fake air scoops up front (how many square feet of function less plastic mesh is that?), some strange pseudo-aero holes on the side, and the light clusters front and aft just look a bit too much like Audi's idea of "aggro-cool".

Pity, this turns a very nicely proportioned car into an angry faced generic rep-mobile, German style.

Hope it drives well. Because this genre needs some alternatives.
Exactly this. Reminds me why I hate M-Sport cars.

That's not such a bad thing, the Mazda 6 is a decent looking car. I would expect the soft roader to look a lot like Mazda's too.

I've just read about this in Autocar smile I'm not interested in what it looks like or the 'brand' or any of that girly bks, but I am really excited by the on paper specs: longitudinal engine, manual box, rear drive, ali chassis and double wishbones all round. It sounds like it could be a genuine 3 series alternative (which I would desperately like - being a lover of FE/RWD cars that handle well, but needing a saloon, I feel rather backed into a C class and 3 series shaped corner - another choice would be superb), and to be honest, with those specs it could possibly be even better! I've registered my interest and will look forward to hearing more smile
