Why do people buy expensive cars and not maintain them?

Reminds me of the types who like i saw a few days ago who spend the best part of £200k on a new Bentley then take it in to the local wash and scratch for £6
The vast majority of people have no understanding of car washing.

A small minority treat it as some kind of minor religion.

Somewhere in the middle there is a normal position.
I think if "normal" is what most people do, then running your car through a car was is normal for most.

Yes, theres people at the extreme who treat it as a minor religion, but between that and "normal" is probably where car enthusiasts usually sit.
I meant normal car enthusiast, not ‘normal’ as in muggles.

Yup.
A proper gold mine. But at least I had the memories & got to experience stuff like the Capri, 200SX & 635CSi while still in my late teens / early 20’s.

As touched on before, it is one thing to be able to buy a very expensive expensive car. it is another to be able to buy a very expensive car and then treat it like sh*t.

I had a discussion with someone recently that they were really unhappy with their Mercedes E Class and were never going to have another.
I was curious as to why they were so upset with it.

There was a recall, and they were upset that the car had to go in between services.

“…whats the point of spending so much money on a car if it’s only going to have to go into the garage!”

To non-car people the thought that:
1) £40k isn’t a huge some of money to spend on a car, it’s actually quite average.
2) More money = more badge & more toys. Not more reliability. (There is a case that the complications required for luxury items that are often as not never used reduces reliability overall).
3) It doesn’t matter how much you spend it still needs maintenance.

My experience of a leased EV over the last few years convinces me that the average muggle would love the experience.
Charge at home, no filling stations, quiet, virtually maintenance free, just put screenwash in it.
No tail pipe emissions.
Luxury feel.
Anything that goes wrong is someone else’s problem.
Hand it back before it deteriorates.
‘Munfly’ they can understand.
Semi Autonomous driving features to smooth out their inattentiveness.

You will own nothing & you will be happy.
