No, I believe it's primarily (not purely) down to the strength of all three of the German brands and the "old man" connotations associated with the Jaguar brand. Same reason all three German brands outsell Lexus (despite Lexus continually topping just about all reliability and customer satisfaction surveys) and the same reason Infiniti never managed to get a foothold in the UK market.
When the products are as close as they are in terms of tangibles, things like brand image become king and all the cars in this market sector are genuinely very good.
Sadly yes - the German makes outsell the Lexus - which is a shame as a lot are missing out on an unrivaled ownership experience. I've had two Lexus and would be very keen to have another. Lovely cars to drive, travel in and painless to own. When the products are as close as they are in terms of tangibles, things like brand image become king and all the cars in this market sector are genuinely very good.
VAG, BMW etc are plagued with unreliability and quality faults that just don't happen on a Lexus (snapped timing chains - I mean really???). Ironic given the German makes trade on quality yet fail to deliver it. BMW and VAG make nice cars - but I wouldn't say good in a long term quality sense.

Back in the early 80’s when I was buying my first Golf GTi Audi had an allocation of 1 space at the back of the showroom and was competing with the Saab to sell a handful of cars to architects and back then Landrover were as few and far between as anorexic sumo wrestlers in towns and city’s.
With the power of advertising and product placement and of course pcp Audi and LR are 2 of the most aspirational marques on the market and it has nothing to do with how they drive I can assure you.
Stick a Merc BMW or Audi badge on any hideous looking turd of a car and it will still sell whereas a great driving beautifully designed car without those badges just won’t sell in any great numbers.
If you think it’s not down to badge snobbery fair enough but if you think the 1000s of A class Mercs are bought because of the great drive think again they are bought because of the 3 pointed star first and foremost!
Exactly - the power of marketing cannot be underestimated. Expect bucket load of 320D M sports to sell - simply because they are "M Sports" and "BMWs"With the power of advertising and product placement and of course pcp Audi and LR are 2 of the most aspirational marques on the market and it has nothing to do with how they drive I can assure you.

Yet a 4 cylinder diesel is a rather unsporty engine. Irony factor - 10
Nigh on £40k for one of these doesn't seem a good buy - the A class is just as bad.
