I thought it was only along the top of the tyre that counts? If not, my truck is very very illegal.
I thought the tread has to be inside the wheel arch line. I'm guessing that any tread outside the wheel arch may cause debris/projectiles to eject rearwards - at significant speed - into the path of following vehicles.

If anyone can point to the MOT test rules on this that would be appreciated?

it isn't just test rules, it's the law

Lotus seems to have found a loop-hole with the latest Evoras: make the rear wing bodywork wide enough to cover the tyres and then stick a massive vent in it, so any vehicles behind can eat your dirt.

Bring back mud-flaps!

The law is a percentage. I design cars for a living and always get sent envelopes to cover by engineeering. If you look at a Caterham or something that will be set on the minimum.

Lotus hasn't 'found a loophole'. The rear edge of the mudguard must not be higher than 150mm above the centre of the wheel.

well the law isn't a percentage, but compliance with it can be achieved with some degree of flexibility.

I just went and asked a studio engineer to check.

30-50° must be covered apparently. 30 degrees forward and 50 back. But now I'm even more confused, does anyone know if those Lotus' are delivered with mesh/covers?

No covers/mesh on the Lotus. Just fresh air and grit.

But what there is appears to fall within the 30/50 degrees mentioned above, so perfectly legal.

I think you'll find there are quite a large number of motorbikes on the road...

Tough call. Do you drive it every day in the hope that it gets damaged, or hide it away so that nobody has to look at it.

I hated the way these looked when they were launched, and time has not been kind.
Incorrect

No dispute with that. The ability to spit out the quantities of a car/truck tyre is massively lower however.
