Interesting comparison, I'm surprised the TDV8 didn't have the edge over the V6 in the GL. You might have felt differently if it was the later, larger version with a ZF8 maybe?

Quite possibly. That Mercedes V6 is the best diesel engine I have driven. The W221 I drove last year had the 320 version and it was just as smooth on idle. The TDV8 in my RR is a bit more dag-dag in comparison, does make a very muted V8 roar though.

I think if I piched a 2015 Vogue against it, then the outcome would be very different.

Anyhow, the GL is a night and day improvement over the various MLs I have driven. But I really don't like the interior, not very luxurious really, just some fake leather glued on the dash.

Having briefly owned a L322 4.2 Supercharged RR, i can confirm that they are brilliant cars, even when a little ropy in places.
I would pay 9-10k for a reasonable miles 4.4tdv8, I prefer the looks of the L322 in some ways compared to the current model.

Crumbs, the LR V8 must be pretty grim, then, because the Merc V6 in my w463 is like a bag of hammers!

Luxury is an over-used word these days. I can't think of a true luxurious car anymore. Maybe a BMW i3.

I think that the GL and S Class use some kind of extra damping and insulation to be fair. The ML350 with the same engine were nowhere as smooth…

The TDV8 isn’t grim by any means and pretty refined, but no hiding that it is diesel.

Clarkson runs around in a green L322 V8 diesel on his cracking farm show. That is the colour I would want.

I was surprised someone who was always very vocal about hating diesel would not drive the supercharged petrol V8, but as he keeps telling us, he is from Yorkshire and therefore a tight arse - can one run one’s farm Range Rover on pink diesel?

Only just. Doncaster is more Lincolnshire or Nottinghamshire. I don't even consider Sheffield or Leeds to be Yorkshire proper really, parts of Derbyshire are further North.

We're heading back towards the discussion of Northern post-codes aren't we?

nice little smoker - looks pretty good condition, and no rust on the arches - £2450

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202106163...

the 350 - that have those balancer shaft issues.

to be honest if the air con and electric seats and brakes work, its cheaper for me to buy that, than get my shedSkoda fixed!

i think the rear seats fold down too for bigger boot, unlike the 55

When he originally reviewed the facelifted range when they were new he said he preferred the diesel V8 as, although it was the wrong fuel, the 4.2 super was way too thirsty and not much faster.

Yes I think the seats do fold from memory. My old man had a 350 (cab) in black with the same wheels as those. It is a good looking thing.

More historical borders than postcodes.

I am from a town which is in the historical counties of Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire. As a kid, our first house was in Lancashire, but if you went out the back garden gate you were in Cheshire. Still, being born in Lancashire makes me a Lancashire lad, however close I was to the border, though I now live in Cheshire, and I am very suspicious of that Yorkshire lot...

Harry Metcalfe is of the same opinion.
I think he still trundles around in an L322 TDV8.

Nice colours and the right number of cylinders.

Recent MOT suggests the underside should be reasonably sound.
Would be nicer at £3500 but a classy and powerful V8 drop top for under thread limit still makes sense.

Hurry though, only a few days of sunshine left.

Some one always has to be on the edge of somewhere, You can upset a lot of people by saying they're not from their birth county especially Yorkshire folk

'appen lad, 'appen.

In other news - someone wanted a fast JDM estate?

Not sure how fast this is, but it looks fast.

The "repair" to the rear arch might put you off though, so maybe find another one.

My mate had a Legnum a few years ago. It seemed to have most of the running gear of an Evo but in a dog-carrier.

It went very well, but wasn't the kind of effortless progress you get from a barge, if that makes sense.

Finding a pristine condition Legnum or Galant under £5,000 is a big ask, in no small part due to their inherent rarity - especially VR4s with manual gearboxes. Most cheaper examples need some degree of rust repair to prolong their lives, particularly around the rear arches and sills. I'd look at the rear arches very carefully if considering it.

The Hyundai wheels - WTF??

Right engine iirc but fk me that's been utterly ruined by the owner, how can you take so little care of a car and also think it's ok to leave it like that for sale - I'm angry at myself for letting my Crown get bird-poo on it and I've got a 2wk old taking all my time!

This one seems a better bet and still within thread - also comes with an auto-box for lazier driving wink

The Lexus you lose half the features on the Crown... at worst it's going to be double the price I said to get it on the road over here so still amazing value imo.
Tommo,

Where do I look for general info on these things? I'd like waft with good economy and reliability and toys.
