Is there a button to lower the tyre pressures?

This one also finds the funeral test a bit of a struggle.
Prior to social distancing though, the funeral could have been held inside the vehicle, which is unusual.

Pah, brakes are for wimps!

I'd reckon. With those miles I'd try a Gumtree ad and/ or Facebook with a set price, you have as much chance there as with the bay of nightmares with no showing cat bidding lying thieves, but without the fees to get such pleasure.

Hi all

Thought this might be the best place to ask, being a little vague as its not meant to be an advert! I have an old barge that is 100% this thread, I got it 10 years ago in thread budget with a years MOT for use for a trip to France thinking if it lasted a year it would do and it's still going!

I checked how many miles I did last year and it was something silly like 650 so I am struggling to justify keeping it

it has 9 months MOT but an advisory list that reads like war and peace - nothing too major just a lot of it! To really get the most out of it it really needs a new set of tyres, lights polishing (again), coolant system overhaul (prob a good hint to what car it is!) and intermittent air bag fault sorting.

Bodywork is also not great got some dings, few bits of rust and some lacquer peel - its also done 187k miles which is 100k more than when some autoboxes have failed on this make and model!. so I am not sure what to do with it. I guess I could get a quote for an overhaul - I would think it would need a few thousand throwing at it to get it to the point where its usable daily - and I just don't have the need or the disposable at the moment.

Do you think marking it as spares or repair even though it is a runner with MOT - listing all known faults and putting it up as a no reserve eBay auction is the best way to move it on? - I am not fussed how much money I really get for it, it owes me nothing and although I have made it sound like a complete basket case it does seem too good for scrap really and I am quite sentimental about it! But equally I want to make sure that the last time I see the person who buys it is the time they drive it away - not 2 weeks later if the gearbox gives up

any advice most welcome!

If you don't want much for it, what about flogging it to Toaster Pilot, who's got a Readers Cars thread running where he's acquiring a new car each month in 2020? He's had some right snotters, so yours would be a breath of fresh air by the sound of things.

I posted this in vol 15, and 14, clearly I (or the vendor) can't take a hint. E60 545 touring, 4k this time. Oily bit dependent...

ETA, now with free engine light on. Look out for it appearing in Vol 17...

Do you think still listing it as spares or repairs? Part of me thinks I would rather give it away rather than subject myself to any of these options!

Good shout will drop him a PM see if he is interested - thanks!

I’m a bit in love with my new W211. The one thing I was unsure of from the original test drive was that it was rather keen to follow cambers and generally felt a bit “on tip toes”. I figured an alignment or some worn suspension was due a fettle but wasn’t going to complain too much at the price.

Having let a lot of air out of the very over inflated tyres it now feels sooooooooo much better.

Not slow either, in that “effortless lump of torque” way.

The w211 is the bargain barge of all time at the moment. It's a Mercedes E-Class. It doesn't rust. It's cheapish to run. It has few weak spots (SBC brakes and OM642s that don't get driven hard enough). Good ones seem to start at about £2.5k and £4k gets a corker. I am not sure what the downside is. They maybe look a bit anonymous and lack the classic Merc styling but they are still good looking cars.

Sub-£2k, first one in my search:

Bit more money, bit more go, bit more sprack, bit more Werthers:

Full fat motor. This is surely the epitome of Thread?

Wasn't there a post-06 update on 211s that addressed a number of issues? At this price point I think I'd be looking at one of them.

...but didn't that also bring the less desirable V6 diesel? Beardage required here smile

Yes to both. Although the OM642 is only problematic if subject to low mileage use.

Diesel doesn't interest me anyway, regardless of age. But if it saw the change from I6 petrol to V6 that might be a show stopper for some.

The facelift did fix some quality problems, the V6 arrived before that around late 04/early 05 (from memory).

I've had my S211 sport for 11 years paid £16k and now worth around £3-4k I suspect. It's done nearly 180,000 miles and been a fantastic car for us. No real issues with the V6 diesel and 7 speed box. Had discs, pads, suspension parts, tailgate struts, tyres, front springs and general servicing and consumables. Still looks very smart in black on black.
No point parting with it because it's not worth much and still doing a great job.
Go for the facelift model without SBC brakes, electrics are much better, and the engine although more refined than the earlier inline six is less economical. I had a 2003 saloon before the estate.
Great cars and a real bargain!

Still a three-figure haggle from top thread, but... it looks very well presented to me, with a good detailing and wheel refurb, has a full BMW service history and is being sold by a BMW specialist with showroom photographs I find reassuring, calming and auspicious.

Would this be a V6? I don’t mind the colour combo. Mileage and spec seem pretty good.

That's a V6 petrol. All the petrols are V6s apart from the 200s (which are I4s). Merc packed in I6 production in about 1997. That car will offer a level of smoothness and refinement completely unknown to most of today's motorists, accustomed as they are to 4cylinder TDIs. Some M273 V6 petrols have a known weakness that can be eliminated by engine number. I suspect that is a late M112 V6 however.

Edit: it has there "dodgy" V6 but as long as it isn't within the affected known range of production it will be fine. Pretty powerful, too, 270+ bhp. The spec is mega although personally I can't abide the grey wood and blue glass of Avantgarde trim.

Yes it will. Someone will be along soon to post the exact spec sheets and outputs from their collection of sad, but strangely compelling and undoubtedly useful, old brochures.
