If this has had an 18k restoration it's an absolute snip.

That is way too cheap, isn't it?

Compared to others for sale yes, but maybe the bubble is starting to burst, or there are undisclosed problems. Was considering the R129 as Alex knows but that ticks many boxes including nice colour. Hhmm, can I get to Northampton after work tomorrow?
Did you go and see it Skyedriver? I e-mailed the seller via the site but didn't get a response.

Notwithstanding your budget, the 1-5 thread is the font of all knowledge on these, and there are other threads running too in the Mercedes (or Classic, can't remember) section. At your budget, you should be able to get a really good car. Might be worth PM-ing Zonergem; he currently has 3 and is both an expert and looking to offload!

I had the 5.0 and loved it and would recommend one, but I do think the 320 is a worthy alternative. The SL is a cruiser rather than a sports car, so you don't drive everywhere full-on, so performance is probably moot most of the time. That said, the 8 cyl engine makes a fantastic noise and, all things being equal, I'd hold-out for one.

The key is to buy on condition though, not necessarily engine. You need to decide whether you want pre or post facelift. I prefer the early cars but there isn't much of significance between them bar aesthetics. Look for full service history and no rust. A pano roof is nice to have (later cars). Above all, check that the roof works, then check again. Trim, panels and roof repairs are pricey, and make sure that repairs really are within your capabilities before taking on any sort of a project. They are terrific cars though, and holding values very well - there is a school of thought that they're already appreciating, although you can still pick them up around the 5-ish mark. I would strongly recommend one.

I can relate to that sentiment!

Car now sold. Sorry to hear about the house sale - fingers crossed it all works out.

How about some Japanese retro muscle?

Pity it's LHD, but it's cheap.

If only they still made ads like that, TV might be worth watching again.

I'd really like an Alpine. I missed the boat when they were generally around the 6-8k mark, but this looks reasonably priced and rather nice.

Looks classy.

£8500 seems reasonable doesn't it? You might struggle to find a parking space big enough, but what a majestic thing it is.

That is beautiful. I'm tempted to measure my empty garage.
As the ancient Chinese proverb (probably) said: 'fools measure; wise man simply buy, drive and be happy forever'.

I truly think this is where “if you have to ask” analogies come from. This car is superlatively huge fking brilliant, even by today’s standards.
Slight amendment to fix.

Unflattering photos, but I've got a real soft spot for these. Under 8 grand and it looks a good'un. Cool and fun summer pose-mobile.

Worth a haggle to bring into thread budget? I wrongly assumed the 6 pots were all 5 speeds.

It's certainly in budget, and great colour. Does it have a slight look of Hillman Avenger about it?

I must say I can't see much Avenger in there. Maybe a bit of Hunter if you squint with one eye and poke the other one out?
You're right. The bonnet looks very Hunter-like in that pic.

It's the wheels that make it look non-BMW-like I think. And the angle it's shot at, obvs.

That car looks pretty decent to me. It's the 'wrong' engine for those that care about that sort of stuff, but looks reasonably well-cared-for.

Probably falls into the faintly desirable box, without being cheap enough to be appealing 'because cheap'.

Made even better with M parallel wheels on the car now instead of the over sized Alpinas.
£8995

Made even better by the fact its got a FAX MACHINE!! Utterly brilliant!
Started of at £13,995 a few months ago with the Alpina wheels and has just been reduced again to its present price.
I know they are worthy, wonderful things, but I struggle to feel much love for Alpina BMWs. Although I suppose an on-board fax machine pretty much guarantees pub bragging rights.

I've self-reported to make exactly that point. It's a 5-10 thread that's been perfectly happy in GG for two years so I'm not sure I see the logic of a move today.

Remove the solar lights and the cars and van in the background and this picture could be one for the period classic picture thread.
Best way to save that car from its surroundings is to buy it and park it somewhere else. I'd be tempted if I wasn't overseas, so I pass it to the thread to do the right thing.
