IIRC the first e21 (and e12) 2.0 engines were 4 cylinder, then when they gave it a 6 cylinder 2.0 it was known as 320/6 and 520/6. It was later just known as 320 at the time of this one, think the range was 316, 320 and 323i. Don't recall there being a 320i on e21, only coming in on e30.

I'd have another 4.0 petrol in a heartbeat, but wouldn't touch the diesel.There are a number of good reasons to avoid the diesel (beyond the obvious). The 2.5TD is trouble - they eat head gaskets, for a start. If memory serves, the 4wd system is off-road use only (whereas the 4.0 has a permanent 4wd mode), and RWD in something with agricultural TD power delivery, leaf springs and boat-like handling makes for some 'interesting' wet weather behaviour - and not in a good way.
The 4.0 petrol, by contrast, is a very unstressed, reliable lump. Thirsty, obviously, but bearably so. And they rock from side to side when you rev them... nuff said?
