I've just removed my plates, started to look abit naff tbh, anyone else just got bored of them, and just thought what's the point?

Kind of feel like every single car out there now has some kind of private registration now or even worse a butchered misplaced one, these make me cringe, was once a rare sight once, but now it's such a common place.
The attention mine attracts increasingly makes me cringe too so its intentionally allocated to the car that very rarely leaves the garage rather than the one I use everyday. So simply flog it for a stack of cash any sensible person would say and I'd wholeheartedly agree with that, but it was a gift I've promised to keep and pass down to the next generation as it was passed down from my parents and grandparents to me.

Back in the day a distinctive a distinctive registration whispered quietly of retained old money as most came from a time when only the very wealthy could afford a car, but now that any lottery winner or Councilist with a few quid left on his credit card at the end of the month can acquire one and there's so many hideously butchered examples pretending to be distinctive plates to be seen they've rather lost the cachet they once possessed.

It’s a shame you can’t play with wealth whispers card anymore, it must really annoy rofl

It’s a sad life worrying about what others think, and even sadder to judge.

If it bothers you that much why not put it on renewable 10 year retention which only costs £80?
Seems like the sensible thing to do for you...unless you absolutely must have it displayed on a vehicle.

I followed 'CUE 8OY' in his white Continental GT on the M25 yesterday. Perhaps a snooker player?

Either way I thought he was well cool.

I think they belong in the 'council' thread.

I've got a "private plate" that my parents bought me for my 18th, it doesn't spell anything but I keep putting it on my cars, my dad had 2, when he died we have put them on mums cars and when she goes I will keep them probably put one of on my motorbike.

We recently purchased a Volvo XC90 for the missus, it came with a 6 digit plate that starts V90. Decided to leave it on as it looks better than the original plate.

For me, its about being able to remember your reg plate easily.

Jimmy White IIRC.

I like a good personal plate, but sold mine back in 2015 as I didn't see the point of paying to switch it between cars.
Each to his own and all that, but it's £80 not even a tank of petrol these days smile

Ok I actually quite like that now.

I'm a hypocrite with this (although I'd never have one).

Fair point.
As a teacher, I was getting sick of the kids recognising the car around town as well. hehe

I'm becoming increasingly of the naff rather than cool persuasion with regard to vanity plates myself so I don't feel the slightest need to display it anymore. That's why it's left on a car that for various reasons has gradually fallen out of use over the last few years and isn't currently taxed or insured.

The original transfer fee was paid by the person who gifted the plate to me so it cost nothing and it's already been on that same car for longer than ten years which means keeping it there rather than forking out for a retention certificate hasn't cost anything either.

I've promised not to sell it but when I offered it to my kids neither of them wanted it as both think its a bit naff too.

Shouldn’t you be off somewhere failing to look important while deliberately starting a motorist vs cycling argument.

I’m flattered that you’re so obsessed with me, but you’re a very odd stalker.

My "new" car is getting on a bit in years and thought I'd spare the old girls blushes with a personalised plate. My first foray into this murky world so this thread was particularly illuminating biggrin

It's a 911 C2S. I've got the last 3 digits sorted as the personal bit but thinking for the 1st 2 digits either:

C2 (Carrera 2) or
C5 (Carrera S)

Is one more naff than the other? Both equally naff?

Judge me people!

Perhaps I never played enough number plate games as a child on long boring car journeys. But I never really pay any attention to plates. Someone could have spent ££££ on a plate that is supposed to mean something, and it will be lost on me.

Good luck to those who like them; it’s just a bit of fun at the end of the day.

Personally, especially on classics, I think a bog standard contemporary plate looks better.

Much cooler to leave the original, date-related plate on.

I agree. Never understood the big deal about trying to hide a cars age.

To be fair, that was partly in jest...I suspect most people would know the approx age anyway.

I do however think the normal plate looks pretty "cluttered" on the car. When I bought it there was a dummy normal sized plate with less characters and to me it looked far better aesthetically.

Indeed - in parts of the country this will put you firmly in the minority of people who don't have a vanity plate smile
