So I made my first car purchase of the year, a 400 quid Ford Focus, 1.8 Zetec 6 months mot and everything works safe for the Aircon.
It's not quite within thread guideline mind, but will tide me over while searching for a nice merc 190e sportline.
Ideally I'd like a 2.6 manual, but I think that may test my patience somewhat in waiting for one to appear, so what about an automatic version? One has popped up in County Londonderry - is anyone close enough to possible assist at all?
Errrr, umm, hate to break it to you, but I sold an exceptionally good 71k 190e 2.6 Sportline manual about 3 months ago. Sorry. It's not quite within thread guideline mind, but will tide me over while searching for a nice merc 190e sportline.

It's funny as my old W124 engine seems resolutely stuck on 24-28 no matter what I do. Even a long run at 60 mph didn't see any improvement in economy (so don't bother with that anymore). It does seem that the more modern, and in particular BMW sizes are capable of significantly better MPG.
More efficient automatic transmissions with higher top gear, electronic fuel injection, better aerodynamics I guess. The Bosch KE-Jet on the older Mercs probably doesn't do fuel economy any favours. I wonder what they would achieve fitted with aftermarket EFI?
I have a '93 BMW 325i which is from a similar era to the Merc W124 and it does 35mpg on a run at 70-80mph, but then it's a manual and around 100kg lighter than a W124 300E. The top gear ratio is slightly shorter than the Merc 4-speed auto (22.5mph/1000rpm).

Sure to provide disgust and ridicule, with 4 cylinders, manual box and cloth but here goes

Quality build, excellent handling and ride with good economy, very robust with its chain driven M43 engine, very underestimated...... Around town better than.a 520i in most respects
Pretty sure Quentin said, back in the day, that you'll be driving very slowly between frequent engine rebuilds in the 518ihttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-BMW-518i-SE-SALOON-...

EFI is the principle change - the lean-burn logic on newer ECU's makes for much better economy, combine that with better-matched ratios and it's a sinch. The Bosch KE-Jet on the older Mercs probably doesn't do fuel economy any favours. I wonder what they would achieve fitted with aftermarket EFI?

Even so, there's not that much in it. My 156 only gets a metronomic 45mpg, and that's with a much more modern diesel!

Brilliant - another example of the 'starts like new' flagged on a BMW recently - so it bloody well should if it's not broken!Advert says, "A collector's Benz... Absolutely no faults or problems... Some age related scratches on the body hence why low price... £2,900".

My personal favourite pic is the front bumper corner held together with gaffer tape!
I know there's some hair-shirt love for poverty spec, but that's taking the biscuit. If it didn't have a sunroof and was Spanish that'd be as low rent as you could get, I suspect. Shame the '1 owner' was clearly of an age where parking by ear was the way to go.....

My father took one from 37k to 110k and the engine was perfect, never gave a moments trouble, not soo much as an oil weep.
M43 was a bloody good engine for its time (much better than the earlier M40 and the latter 'N' series

I'm more surprised that I can't get mine down below 24.9 mpg (brim to brim) when driving it as hard as possible!
That's hypermiling that is. Personal best in the 535 is 22.6 - and that was on the dash so probably exaggerating things. If the elusive decent old MB diesel were to pop up I would be tempted!

Wow, if that's half as good as it looks it's a bargain. If those wheels are genuine (and especially if they've got the larger rears) then they're worth a fair chunk on their own.harrykul said:

You'd need to be very brave considering the somewhat worrying surroundings, lack of MOT, and filthy interior, but it's the cheapest W12 I've seen by quite a long way
