This looks fantastically crisp. How hard would it be to chuck in the drivetrain from a 172 or similar?
It looks great, but I suspect that the reality of actually living with one of those won't match the memories or expectations.
My second car was a Clio 1.4 RT. I can't begin to imagine how (even more) awful it would be with an auto box.

Deprecation on these is great, 6 year old car that was only 10K new still worth 50%.

Group 6 insurance would make for an ideal teenager's car. I'm in the market for a teenager's car, which could also be used as a family vehicle for the odd trip with 4 people, a small dog and some luggage.

Hmm. Only thing puts me off is no aircon.

And that it's about the least appealing car you could ever put a teenager in despite being in my eyes a pretty cool car

I just showed it to my 16-year old. His response was positive. Sees the possibilities of trips with his mates, camping and the like. Prefers it to an Astra etc.

I went around Scotland with some SSE pole inspectors for a week last year, they are all driving these with raised suspension, chunky tyres and winches.

They look pretty badass for what they are

Hmm look at little closer and look at the alternatives

I looked at them for either my Mum or my daughter and found there are far better alternatives, it's cheap / basic / ugly the only reason to buy one is if you need a newer car for work reasons, the CRV, RAV4, Jeep etc alternatives are just better

Can you buy a 2013 CRV or RAV4 from a retailer for under £5k?

Yes, my mum had a 1.4RT; I hated driving it. Her previous car - A Rover Metro 1.4 - was much more fun.

I'm not sure which part you didn't understand ?

A £5k CRV / Rav4 is the better and likely more reliable car

My point was that a £5k CRV or RAV4 would have to be significantly older, thereby increasing the likelihood of breakdowns and increasing maintenance costs. There's a pay off involved.

But what a lovely crisp piece of design it is, though. the 25, of this era was especially nice in my opinion.

I had a four door in this colour but mine was a 1.9 non turbo Diesel RT. Although the idea of a diesel sans forced induction sounds horrific today, In reality, the 63bhp offered up moved it along quite acceptably. It was totally reliable, too, which was a surprise.

Talking of Renaults, I once owned this:

I can't remember that last time I saw one.

Another French oddity:

A Renault 15 GTL Coupe. I have never seen one of these before:

Love these, although they're definitely not the prettiest car to come out of France they do have a certain charm.
A pal of my dad's had the racier 17, with double headlights and louvres on a smaller side window - looked Ace to an 8 year old me

My point was that despite being older they are still better in every way and likely to be more reliable too
(obviously you have to know enough to buy the right cars)

From personal experience, I can also add that the insurance for these cars is also considerably higher.

Have you driven one of those Dacias? A company I worked for put a couple in the pool fleet because they were dirt cheap, and I came to despise them. They're absolutely st to drive, they are like a not very good car from the 80s in the way they ride, handle, and feel (and despite misty eyes we've come a long way), although they are as good as you can expect for the original asking price. They're cheap for a reason, both new and old. Oh, and they rust.

Outside the handful of people who buy one because work compells them to have a new car and they want to spend as little as possible they are aimed at the same people who bought Ladas/Skodas/Yugos/Protons and other poor cars because they just had to have a brand new one. Once they don't have the "value" associated with being a brand new car they're about as appealing as genital warts.

I'd happily spend £5k on an ageing CRV over that, it'll be better to drive and no less reliable.

There is a (now very lengthy) thread full of happy PH Duster owners, admittedly the range is quite spec-sensitive (i.e. avoid the 1.6) though. My boss borrowed the 1.6 and said it was the worst car she's ever driven, I tried the TCe and wondered what the hell she was on about, perfectly decent and in-keeping with the absurdly low price.

Well. That's me told. I shall remain silent in future until I know enough to buy the right cars. I hadn't realised I was dealing with The Universal Posessor of Absolute Truth. Gronda Gronda, Your Highness.
