That may be why it appeals!

90s American brick. For some unknown reason I have always found the shape quite alluring (as a casual observer).

Apart from the excessive overhang (front wheel drive?) I rather like that. It's quite elegant and (waistline up) rather well proportioned. Not what you'd expect from Cadillac at all.

they shouldn't be in the slightest bit appealing but I just cant help wanting a V8 with a sunroof and the spare wheel mounted on the boot lid.
Shouldn't they? I love 'em.

99% of Soarers these days are horrendous pieces of chav tat. However, that one is very, very cool yes
Ahem...

But I agree, unfortunately that's the price bracket they have hit. I had to change a few things back to standard on mine.

You can fall in the 1% too, dont worry wink
It is generally just the TT's (and some 3ltrs) that are chav tat. The v8's tend to still be fairly standard. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you own one) prices are on the rise. I was regularly posting them in the bargain basement thread last year, but this year there is nothing around that price.

The 12 year old me would have killed for an Audi 200 Avant quattro Turbo! HUGE things, incredibly fast. Daddy of the RS2.
They were VERY rare cars even when they were new on account of them being so comically overpriced. I don't think I have ever seen an Avant - though I did see the saloon at an Audi dealership. My dad looked at them, along with the S class Mercedes and BMW 7 Series - though he ended up with a Jag. The Audi was a good car, but not in the same league as the other three.

As an estate car I can see some point to it, though I still find its price difficult to swallow! The Avant Quattro turbo was nearly £29,000 in 1987 - if you bought a Mercedes 300TE instead, you could also buy a Peugeot 205 with the money you would have saved.
Thud +1.
Phwooaarr. Doesn't look too messed with, and a manual. My Dad had a 100, a 2.1 CS I think, just after I passed my driving test. One of my first solo flights in that 100 was very close to vmax. Huge upgrade from a 1.6 Renault Fuego. Long gearchange throw, very nice noise, bulletproof quality but engine way out over the front wheels - understeer city. That turbo must be quite a nippy old thing smile

I had one about 20 odd years ago and I absolutely adored it. The only one I've ever seen with a solid sliding electric sunroof.

The naivety of youth made me trade it for a '77 Trans Am. BIG mistake! It was a bucket and ended up breaking it. frown

It's just a shame the interior is so typically Japanese and awful.

yes the interiors are a let down, especially considering these ranged from thirty odd grand upto £70k. (Although being Japanese, everything that should work, typically still works)

What is the appeal of the Soarer? The press didn't seem to like it very much when it was released, is it just reliable, cheap V8 goodness or is there more to it?

It thought the Z30 Soarer (SC400 in USA) was generally well received from a performance / handling / styling point of view? I know the later Z40 Soarer (SC430) got a hard time on launch.

Anyway, the appeal? I just love the looks (personal, I know). I generally prefer driving bigger cars, and it handles very well for such a big heavy car. I have the Turbo (later single) rather than the V8, and again for such a big car it goes very well. It has usable back seats (for kids, anyway) and yes, they are cheap and reliable.

The smile it puts on my face when driving it more than makes up for the interior.

EDIT: I also like that I never see another on the road, and nobody (outside of enthusiasts) knows what they are so it's fairly anonymous

But, but - manual! Didn't these lose the rear seats (can't see from the pics)? Shame if so because these are decently affordable (maybe partly why)

That version has rear seats; it was the later full convertible (no window frames or roll-over bar) that was a 2-seater.

Two more XJS, both with the small engine.

Looks nice, sounds genuine:

Low mileage, cheap, but you're possibly/probably buying from a nutter:

Would love one of those - that one only 10 mile from me BUT like all 2+2 dropheads (944, Merc SL etc) the rear seats are useless for anyone with legs.

As an aside, the ad says Simon J Robinson recently passed on, shame as I used to like seeing what he had at the side of the road although I do know someone who bought a car from him and wouldn't buy another.
