I would like just like to say 'thank you' to the car sales folks on here responding to this thread in such a constructive manner, even when faced with sometimes inflammatory posts/questions.

Most car sales thread tends to go downhill very rapidly, becoming a war of heavily opinionated words between the dealer haters and the overly defensive sales people, with neither group willing to concede that the truth, as ever, lies somewhere in the middle, that there's good, bad, and indifferent on both sides.

This one, in the main, hasn't - so well done, long may it continue - very informative!

Agreed great thread. Despite attempts to thwart it has remained good reading.

Of the 79 Mustang GT V8 Autos currently on Autotrader can 15 of them really have done exactly 151 miles ? Or is this some kind of industry code ?

Sorry hit the wrong button. Their target was to sell certain cars by the end of the week. Are used salesmen given targets based on units sold or told a particular vehicle needs to be gone by the end of the week?

No idea but I have one in stock on 6k miles and its so far generated not one enquiry. Thought it would have been in and out. Nice firing it up every couple of days though the noise is wonderful.

Why are trade in offers, little more than attempted theft.

Maybe give an example, and say what you think the trade-in value should have been?

Every car taken in has costs attached, you may think your car is perfect but to retail it will more than likely need some work.
Full Valet
Service
MOT
Warranty
Tyres
Plus anything that is worn replaced (Bushes, Shockers, Springs etc)
It's not just a case of buy it at X and bang it on the forecourt at Y.

Yeahh but £2k mark up means £2k profit; scandalous!

I traded my car in. Was given £6,000. Same place had it up for sale at £9,000 a week later. I was happy. They have a margin (I'm guessing they'd be looking to net at least £1,500 per unit) so after prep, overheads, warranty cost, being chipped down a bit etc they probably just about got that. Otherwise they wouldn't exist. Private sale for mine might have been £7,250 if I could have been bothered to try.

Surely if you don't like the trade in, and you think your car is worth more, you go and sell it to whoever you think it is worth more to (if that makes sense) ?

An offer is just an offer. It will be based on what the car is worth to the dealer, not to you.

In any case, you are not obliged to accept it if you feel it is too low.

Thank you for the comment there are some of us salesmen who are decent, met a few nice people from this also, lots of messages also asking for advice about situations and hopefully giving them an insight of information

Usually its numbers based, you either need to sell 20 that month or hit a certain profit target lets say 30k...

we do get the odd incentive to sell a particular car if its been in stock for a while.

Yes, but your perfect would probably be someone else's utter cr*p.

Your initial "most dealers don't do any of those" is bullst. I'd say almost all dealers do most. Would you buy a car from *any* dealer with barely legal tyres, and a month's MOT? Dealers have to take the risk of stuff breaking, as well. If the car throws a rod or blows a turbo within weeks, you're going to expect them to sort it, regardless of warranty.

Valet in this instance means a damn good clean. Not "detailing" or paint correction (although some will do that almost routinely).

If I was buying a 70k Audi A4 ( miles I presume, not £ ) and it was pointed out to me that the bushes were worn but could reasonably last another 12 months then I'd be quite satisfied with that.

I'd expect that anything requiring imminent replacement would be done, or else I would buy a different one, but in buying a well-used car I'd expect that some items will require replacement at my cost during my ownership of it.

Anyone here think differently to that?

Is it a sellers market at the moment? I've been looking at a few 2nd hand cars for tuition but I can't knock them down off the list price for love nor money.

Also the values seem to be really high, the same car I bought 2 years ago is worth £1000 more!

I think that's pretty reasonable.

When I bought my Volvo V70, which I thought was very fairly priced, I wanted the cloudy headlight lenses cleaned and noticed that the cambelt was due. Both were done without complaint, exactly as I'd expect, and because there was less than 6 months MOT on it they re-did that too (at their suggestion). I then bought the car at the advertised price. I want these places to make a profit otherwise they won't be there, but I also don't want anyone trying to take the piss. At the service that followed, about 12 months later, I had a number of jobs to address which were entirely - and rightly - my responsibility.

You read all sorts of stories of woe on PH that tend to make the buyers come across as unreasonable dick-heads. By no means are all garages perfect, but most car purchases can be enjoyable experiences if you approach them right. Maybe I've been lucky, but I've enjoyed all of my car purchases, new and used, private and retail.
