You can now see who the target customer is for Merc by the chintzy crap they have been throwing together for quite a few years now.
Tailgate open and balloons with foot high £299 per month written on the doors so the lease addicts can see where their next fix is coming from! biggrin
You really must live in a chav area - you were telling us how your friends and neighbours all leased and tried to "keep up with the jones", now you're telling us the local merc dealer has to use balloons and bunting to attract the locals in.

Have you thought of moving? Or can you not afford to? I'd be happy to chip in if it helped make you less bitter?

ETA: isn't PCP like getting fully reamed compared to the 'evil' of leasing?
He just likes getting a reaction and has to resort to more and more "banal" statements rather than accept hes just irritating people and getting in the way of an interesting debate among the grown ups.

I remember STI! there was a hint of the bell about him.

I just imagined this tbh.

Anyway, back on topic!

Indeed.

Funny, i was listening to the radio today and an advert for a merc came on and they didnt even mention the price of the car (or i dont recall that they did) just the deposit and monthly payments.

It was still a PCP type deal but i thought it interesting that there was no headline price figure or even a £x,xxx off price offer.

Can't remember the last radio advert I heard for any car which mentioned the headline price, almost all car marketing nowadays focuses on the monthly payment.

Please, with a lease you are paying for the use of a car, with a debt you are paying for the use of the money. It's as simple as that. Time scale has nothing to do with it, an overdraft is a debt as much as a personal loan or a mortgage. More people seem to be prepared to pay for the use of a car, therefore leasing appears to be becoming the norm. I've seen a figure of 70%; 70% of what I don't know, but that isn't really a problem in his discussion wink

Fair enough. Maybe it was the discussion on this thread made me listen more than i normally would.

I know leasing is very common in the US, but how do people in mainland Europe or Australia acquire their new cars?

A mortgage on the other hand is a debt as you've borrowing the money and are then paying it back.
Speaking of phones - surely the way most people pay a monthly payment and get a new phone every couple of years is a convenience thing, and with most other things being paid that way, maybe a leased car is the answer?

I was sceptical of a lease but after now being able to access good staff discount on a few car manufacture lease deals, its seems silly not to.
I pay £198pm with no upfront costs/deposits/fees.
I know exactly how much that car is going to cost me every month.
Its a white good.
I love it and I look after it, but in a years time I will hand it back and get another brand new one.
I've run expensive cars, I run two classics cars so its good just to have a car I can turn the key and go in with no worries in the world.

Where have we got to in this world when people want to dress debt up into anything but not want to call it DEBT!
Like your debt with the PCP deal on the Q5?
I will have a little bet with the "failed car dealer", I will give £1k to his charity of choice if he can find a post where I say I had a PCP on an Audi Q5 or he gives £1k to diabetes uk if he FAILS again!

Instead of the £1k bet if you want you could come round and tar my drive if the temping doesn't work out as usual with all of your previous ventures! wink

You really like making up wee stories to make yourself seem important don't you?
I don't know how my friends fund their cars and never mentioned bunting, why would I be bitter?
"When I can walk my dogs and choose when to work, not being in the rat race anymore!" oh that was what you said before your car dealing empire came crashing down around you and you had to PCP a second hand golf to commute 100's of miles a week!

Found where I said I had a PCP on a Q5 yet?

A contractual obligation to pay for a service for the term of the contract is not the same as a debt. If you sign up for gym membership with a minimum term, it's an obligation but not a debt.
Try not paying it and see how that goes for you! wink

Good to know, wouldn't want one of those again! smile

Matey, you've had pcp deals in the past, you know it, i know it because you posted it. If you've subsequently trawled through and removed posts just like you removed your own car history from your profile, then thats clearly your problem.

And if it wasnt the Q5, it certainly was on "a" car you've owned.

Oh aye it was a great lifestyle motortrading - i've always said that. Very nice to work from home. Sadly it didnt pay the sort of money i know i am capable of earning.

It wasnt an empire, it was one bloke flogging cars. I wound it down when i got back into IT.

And i'd a golf diesel because i commuted a heady 43 miles to work and it took me an hour. Oh the humanity! Great job though so was worth it, and great experience. Which nicely give me the niche skills to get into....

Contracting - i make decent money and i have very little hassle. Just negotiated one day a week working from home too. So even less hassle.

See - i'm not afraid to talk about myself because i've nothing to hide or be ashamed of.

Clearly you cant do the same.

Yes. You're right. I respond because (a) its like shooting fish in a barrel and (b) its that banal it needs addressing.

Will let it be now and hopefully he'll go away.

What do you mean let it be?
Are you taking the bet or not?

A big IT contractor like you shouldn't be worrying about £1k bet ,or no balls?
