1er is taller than the E46, they always remind me a bit of one of these ;-)

This is more like it...

Will you all STOP posting those CSL pictures. I'm not buying one, no matter how good they sound and how quick they are!!! wink

(But if someone wanted to give me one, I'd not say no...more probably "Yes oh yes gimme the keys!")

Ooh, innit big. wink

I still think these ever expanding kidneys make modern BMs look like Rovers.

Are E30 M3s with heated leather, electric sunroof and aircon seen in a less favourable light by the purists? I notice from the roadtests they're quite a bit heavier than the base spec kerb weights.

not that i'm aware of. people just like to moan when they can. that E30 M3 is basically the same size as that 1er, the difference is pretty negligible to be honest, considering all the safety stuff it must adhere too whilst still attempting to remain remotely comfortable inside.

Pretty much the same height, maybe.

You'll notice that the 1er bonnet is ~4in higher, it's at least that much wider (hard to be certain from that perspective), and it weighs ~30% (!) more. Oh, and it's running on stupidly wide rubber which robs you of feel, feedback and the delicacy of handling that (good) older cars are known for.

This also ignores the 'ugly stick' factor which the 1er has suffered from since birth...

What width rubber will the 1M-sport come with? I notice some of the normal 135is come on 215f/245r ( with options for bigger ). Are they going to be on similar to the E46 CSL ( 235/265 )?

Superficially the 1er may not look that much bigger in that picture, but the proportions are definitely more Buddha than Kylie. The size of the bumpers on the 1-M series makes it look like an E30 converted into a hovercraft biggrin

Maybe that's an option for an 'Evolution' of the 1M ( or whatever it ends up being called )? Having no cost delete options for stuff like aircon etc to take some weight off? They managed to knock almost 200kg off the E46 M3 with the CSL. If they could do similar with the 1M it would be acceptably light.

Even if it could travel on water there'd be something wrong with that smile - I'll be interested to see how much wider 'the stupidly wide rubber' will be than the M-cars of old

that's good news that he likes it. evo are obviously about how things drive from a drivers point of view if that makes sense. e.g. an S class isn't good because it's a bit wallowy (when it's supposed to be comfy). means it must drive quite well. good to know it feels like an NA engine to a certain extent too.

I think his opening remark at the top of page 45 sums it up for me. I like most of the cars he seems to and I'm itching to see the M-divisions take on a small turbo rwd-er........for that reason, I'm in smile

So am I but it seems I won't be itching for very much longer as I appear to have been invited by BMW to fly to Germany at their expense this week to try out the 1M coupe!

Glad to see a very positive review. Really like Chris Harris, real asset to EVO imo. Genuine enthusiast and I think he really conveys this in his writing style.

Does he still have his E92 M3?
