The old faithful w124 passed its MOT with the usual "corroded brake pipes" trinket advisory today. It really is getting enthusiastic with the rust on the arches, but I am rather attached to it so have treated it to two new tyres and some tracking and will drive it up to and around the highlands at some point in the next few weeks. I like the old thing.
that's all mine got 3 pipes corroded W00DY said:

Stunner.
It won't end up in budget and I'm never going to read the ad, but I figured it'd be appreciated here.

Mine is up tomorrow at 13:40, and I'm expecting exactly the same advisory. Spent a couple of hours underneath least weekend rubbing them down along their whole length (mostly pretty good really) painting then smearing a thin coat of hot runny Waxoyl over them. Hopefully be OK.Apart from that I'm expecting to sail through. 700 odd miles since last MOT, I should be ashamed.
Maybe get the steels & winters off next weekend & get the 15 holes & Contis on.

Same here Oa, fettled the 200TE last September before the Nice or bust run, loaded to the gunnels both ways, flew through last week, well chuffed.P
I've just been cruising ebay looking for W220's and came across this interesting picture (shows you how exciting my life is)
I've often wondered how I would go about asking a seller if they would mind if I took the covers off the engine, to check for leaking injectors of course, now I can see that you might not have to....

I didn't see this earlier but apologies if it was.
Why am I attracted to this? And why should I avoid it?

With the budget you have what about a holiday to South Africa where you can pick up a RHD rust free example within budget whilst gorging on bargain priced wine and steak.
I ain't gettin' on no plane, fool. But there is a whole world of dreaming there: http://www.absolutecars.co.za/showroom.asp

Evening all, as a long time follower of this thread in particular, thought it was about time I posted. Car history is very long from mk2 escorts as a teen to more recently ticking off various cars that I've liked, including RX8, MX5, LS400, 9-5 aero (couldn't bond with it). Had many lease cars over the years, some interesting some white goods.
Anyway my latest purchase, collect tomorrow, has prompted me to post. A8 D2 2.8 Quattro sport. 52 plate with pretty decent service history and 67,000 miles.

Thanks for the kind remark SpeckledJim!
My guess (and it is only that) would be that the ride of the XJ40 on 15" wheels and 225/65 15 tyres lies somewhere between the two. I seem to think the XJ6 Executive had the 'sports' suspension didn't it? That will be a fair bit firmer than the XJ40 on comfort springs.
I doubt the XJ40 will match the complete compliance of the early Series cars though. I haven't been in a Series I since I was a child so cannot remember how they ride, but the general consensus seems to be that the XJ40 is slightly firmer than them at low speed - but with better handling.
Once problem with the 15" wheels is the availability of the tyres. No one makes the 225/65 15 99W size any more. You could go down to 225/60 15, but this means a loss in side wall and an over reading speedo - or you can go up to 225/60 16, which retains speedo accuracy, but still loses sidewall. This matters less with a car with 4 good 15" tyres with a few years of life left in them of course.
I needed to make this choice recently and decided after much agonising to fit 16" wheels with 225/60 16 tyres. The ride is actually much less affected than I had feared - and may even be improved slightly at very low speed over the 15" wheels. The march of technology, I guess. It doesn't handle really big pot holes quite so well though. Slightly more detail on page 7 of my rust-and-restoration thread

Thank you. Very informative. You didn't consider pepper pots from an S3 and 205/70/15? Its what the S1 had and the ride was fabulous. My guess (and it is only that) would be that the ride of the XJ40 on 15" wheels and 225/65 15 tyres lies somewhere between the two.
