Therefore not road legal. The DVLA will eventually come down on this illegal practice. Why individuals wish to not comply with the law intentionally is an interesting question.

Last year the DVLA were on about scrapping spacing laws, I think.

I seriously doubt if the DVLA, VOSA or the Police are ever going to get to grips with this any more than all the illegal modifications (HID lights fitted improperly, DPFs removed, Cats removed etc) illegal black and silver plates and so on.

I wondered about why people think these laws don't apply to them, then I remembered I occasionally break the speed limit and decided I'd better shut up. I don't like these very obvious two fingers to law plates, but there doesn't seem to be any serious desire to enforce the law in this and many other areas.

Possibly but then again? The increase in the number of missing front plates on so called Supercars and Kit cars and Hot Rods (interesting combination) currently, is also interesting. I suspect that the authorities will come down on this in the end because allowing cars on the road with only one registration plate and that illegible or so difficult to read as to be illegible cannot be allowed. You may remember that Flashguard which prevented camera shots of Number plates was made illegal a few years go for just that reason and off it went with all the other similar products. Just a question of when.

You raise an interesting question - I wonder how many of the crappy plates - like that one I posted on the Pink RR Sport actually fail ANPR - I suspect that provided the characters have just been moved about, ANPR doesn't care - I bet the reg is recorded as a single string and provided it matches up with something in the database, there's no big issue (from a checking insurance, recording speed for SPECS etc). Not saying it's right, but unless/until they have used the wrong font, butchered letters, used 5 for S etc, the powers that be probably don't care as much as they'd like us to believe. I see so many of these plates every day that it obviously isn't a priority for the Boys in Blue.

I think survival personally has become the critical issue for the Police, With the constant fiddling of the crime figures, pension changes, extensions to retirement changes and ridiculous initiatives every other week from the home office I would imaging that a policeman's lot is most definitely not a happy one.

Possibly going to get my ass handed to me here, but why the hate for incorrectly spaced plates?

I think it's downright chav, and illegal, to put screws on plates and use fonts etc to make letters and numbers look like something different - You might as well put a fake plate on your car, totally unacceptable and illegal.

But moving some spaces around? The plate spells EXACTLY the same as before, it's not misleading, it's obvious that it's a genuine number plate, the letters and numbers are perfectly legible, nobody can dodge a speeding fine that way, why should it be illegal?

Because the law says so. That is the law. You could equally argue why wear a seat belt? Or use indicators? Because it is a legal requirement. It is not a defence to ignore the law because you disagree with that law. If it were there would be precious few prosecutions.

Riknos, there are many plates that rely on the space to differentiate them from a plate with a similar row of characters. Several have been featured on here.

Personally, I would say a SAFETY item such as a seatbelt is MUCH more important and nothing like a number plate? I'm pretty sure nobody has died from changing a space on their number plate? Likewise indicators - stop accidents, a plate doesn't.

It's just reading some posts on this thread from users getting really upset that someone has removed a space from their numberplate!

A illegal numberplate is not actually the problem, it's a just a symptom. The real problem is the attitude to the law that says my own personal vanity is far more important to me than any need to comply with whatever the legal requirements are.
