Estates - are they now cool?
Discussion
The E46 B3 touring was sadly too small for a young growing family (double buggies and rear facing car seats saw it's redundancy) so has been replaced by an S212 E350cdi. Nothing like as enjoyable as the B3, but with the DMS remap it's now around 313hp & 750Nm, feels brisk.

I did exactly the same!!! We were expecting twins so I told the missus I'd better replace the MG TF with a family car. Came back with one of those!
Kept the MG, rebuilt the RS6 (they all do that sir) and bought a Saab 9-5 Aero Hot Estate for daily kiddie duty as well.

I know someone will end up posting a picture of Father Ted and Dougle with the cows......
But I never thought I'd see a Golf estate get close to a 5 Series Estate in size. Have you had them alongside each other? Can't be much in it?
I announced I needed a sensible estate and returned with this:
She seemed quite pleased by the practical'ness' of it. Her only comment was "Those wheels seem really big to me, won't they cost a lot when they wear out?".
She had quite a shock first time I took her out in it

When you finally own an estate car, its not long before you realise that you've spent years buying all the wrong cars as they were just saloons or hatches.
My first was an '87 Volvo 740GL auto estate. All things considered, (and I still have my Corvette and VRS Octavia), it was the best car I ever owned. Remove the back seats and you have 2m long of load space, for stuff and high enough for cooking on awaydays. It also had a huge basement too. Very nimble and tight turning cars despite how they look. Been tempted with a 940SE recently for £500.
I have a '96 Chevy S10 pickup too as my 3rd car and I'm wondering now how I managed all these years without a pickup!!

I will say that i do love the the saloon-derived estates. The hatchback-derived ones though not so much for me.
The new Golf R estate is nice and also the new Leon Cupra ST but i just prefer it to be a "proper" estate.
Saying that, the Golf R's boot is much bigger than the last gen RS4 which really questions that whole statement.

Sold on my E39 saloon as I gradually realised over the 18 months I ran it that I really missed having an estate...
...ended up with this beasty:
A JDM Subaru Legacy Spec-B 2 litre twinscroll turbo. It's pretty rapid, handles well on its Bilsteins
It has gained a dog guard... more to keep dog hair off the seat backs than for crash safety
I think it's pretty cool...

That V90 is a lovely thing, love the different colour too. Way cooler than the S90.
The old Vauxhall's above are magnificent and answer the thread question hands down.
I have a phone picture library full of estates but I'll just put this one out there as a rarity. 1973 Toyota Crown Estate (this one's not mine) from Revival last year.

Absolutely adore Volvo's new front end design. Lovely motor there chap ^
Always been a fan of estates, really bothers me that the RS / AMG ones never made their way here en masse. Would love a V70 with some oomph.
You can, get a V70R. Probably the best car I've ever owned.Always been a fan of estates, really bothers me that the RS / AMG ones never made their way here en masse. Would love a V70 with some oomph.
