Just appeared on my Facebook feed, this should please a lot of you!

While they have now allowed email sign in they still require a photograph. I suppose I could post a pic of my dogsmile I get the sense that they really want to get you as close to FB as possible. Tried signing up with no pic and it would not let me
I can't sign up at all, just hangs with 'signing in'

Perhaps I'm showing my age though I'd have thought at 38 I'm the target demographic. Regardless I can't make head nor tail of the site. Seems a mess, and content is hard to fine let alone find twice.

i've looked around recently and think its ok if you treat it like twitter, just browse by each tribes posts

I think people are thinking right: I want to read all the Porsche content , or all the Road trip content, and I think like that iots not possible

TBH when I first read about DriveTribe (ages ago, when it was announced) I got the impression that the content creators would be a selected bunch of established motoring journalists who would publish articles and/or videos - a bit like Motor Trend on Demand and none of this "create your own tribe" type affair.

I got early access and have had a good look around the site, but the interface is poor and although there seems to be plenty of content, often you open a promising-looking link/tribe to find hardly anything there. In fact I'd compare tribes to individual threads on forums such as PH; interesting looking title but no real sense of what lies within.

I'm gradually getting used to it.

As such I've started a tribe to put my photography and motoring adventures related content...

Has anyone read section 10 of DT's T's & C's?

DriveTribe said:
INDEMNITY / COMPENSATION TO US

10.1.Without limiting our other legal rights and remedies, you agree to indemnify (compensate) us and keep us indemnified from and against all claims, damages, expenses, costs and liabilities (including legal fees) relating to or arising from your use of DRIVETRIBE or arising from any breach or suspected breach of these Terms of Use by you or your violation of any law or the rights of any third party.
It then repeats precisely the same section (10.1's text) again, for no apparent reason.

So - I post something on DT, someone sues DT over it and they come after me over it?

fk THAT.

This is why they want FB log in as a preference; that way whoever posted the offending article is easily identified/reachable. Accountability and all that.

Yep - exactly what this seeks to do. You're on the hook for any losses they suffer by you breaching the terms or the rights (say, copyright for example) of any third party. They might struggle to enforce such a non-negotiated term in court though. Woul dpossibly fall fall of UCTA.

Or you can just post a blank picture (like I've done - I'd have posted a pic of my car but would only allow me to take a picture there and then and couldn't be arsed going outside).

After a couple minutes poking around it looks like it wasn't worth the effort anyway...

You have to sign up to view it/decide whether you want to sign up or not? biggrin

From the tribe concept it sounds like they're aiming for it to be a social media service for car enthusiasts rather than a forum. Tribes = Facebook pages (groups?).

fk that bit in bold in particular. You post summat. Someone takes offence, you pay Amazon compensation!
Incidental, but Drivetribe isn't anything to do with Amazon, in fact the contract the ex-TopGear folk have with Amazon has specific clauses to permit this site to be set up.

It's actually a venture between:
  • Clarkson+Hammond+May+Wilman (ex-TopGear bods)+
  • 21st Century Fox (Rupert Murdoch)+
  • Atomico (Private equity)+
  • Breyer Capital (Private equity)+
  • some individual investors
So, in terms of funding, DriveTribe has got bugger all to do with the Amazon Grand Tour programme.

Edited to fix a typo.

It's really hard to know if it will go the distance or not. I have 6000+ members in my tribe, but on a daily basis it's me who's posting most content and items are typically getting 4-5 bumps on average, with a few comments here and there. Statistically, I find it strange that out of 6000 potential viewers, there aren't more 'interacting' - which suggests to me there was an initial membership surge out of curiosity, and the amount of daily visitors to DT is actually quite comparatively low so far.

What I like about the site is that it's very easy to find tribes and interact with them, it's very easy to start up your own tribe on any topic, and the editing feature is stupidly easy (and basic) to use - so anyone can put up content. Some tribes have professional or semi-professional photographers and so on, and the quality of some stuff on there is superb.

What I don't like is the lack of transparency on the site. I can't tell at this point in time how many tribes there are, or how many people are actually using it, and so on. Youtube for example gives you more indication as to it's overall size/success and thus you can gauge how well you're doing in the grand scheme of things.

As has been well documented already, DT is also suffering badly from those who are merely spamming other tribes to advertise their own, without adding any meaningful content. I'm deleting about 2-3 a day from mine and it's something I've made a point of not doing.

I think part of the problem is the news feed is terrible. It doesn't seem to promote much new content and mostly stuff the paid guys posted weeks ago.

I run an MX5 tribe with 450 members. I post a fair bit and soem popel post some pics, get about 2 bumps per day.

There's another MX5 group with nearly 7K members but it's quieter than mine for posts and bumps.

Very odd.

I'm guessing that's the one I wrote about driving to the Arctic in one? If so, thanks smile
