French cars are usually some of the best at surviving rust, its the other bits that wear out.biggrin

I walked past a V reg Peugeot 406 estate the other morning and I couldn't see a spec of rust. Bodywork was really tidy. Something you would struggle to say about most similar age German or Japanese cars!

Same for most older models. I have had 27 Volvos, almost all 98 or under and have discovered a couple of small blisters at worst.

Nothing on my N reg, nothing on my G reg, nothing on my D reg...

I'd not thought about this before, but I think you're right; I haven't seen a rusty French car for years.

Jaguar have to be applauded for keeping one eye on their heritage at all times; my aluminium X350 could be woefully free of the traditional rust but they ensured that they used mild steel on the fuel tank straps so they can rot through and the tank can drop out, and I had a brake pipe burst the other day to remind me of the pedigree of this big cat.

I can go with older Ovlovs not rusting, my V70 1999 had an MOT last week, I went and looked underneath whilst it was on the ramp, and the only bits of rust on it are around the exhaust hangers...the main exhaust is s/steel, body work as clean as the day it came out of the factory 248k miles ago smile

My £300 V70 was completely free of it, impressive for a 51 plate. Looked like a 5 year old car underneath

Agreed. I used an S-reg Volvo V70 T5 for a while last year and there just wasn’t any rust. Really impressive

This is my shed



1500 quids worth of Insignia in 160BHP 2.0CDTI form, its currently showing 180k miles and still drives like a new one (we had one 10 years ago as a company motor)

There's a large folder of bills for routine maintenance and its had a clutch and DMF and has so far proved reliable needing only a glow plug in the time I've owned it, I've fitted a Pioneer android auto double din unit and reversing sensors and camera, it is big enough to carry all my gear and does almost 50mpg, its not the most inspiring of cars but its quiet, comfy, fairly punchy and refined, it wears its miles really well apart from a split in the front seat base, for the money I think its pretty good and doesn't feel like an old car.



I actually polished it last week biggrin

If you can, spring for the 4 litre. Be very careful of rust.

Good ones are starting to get quite expensive and cheap ones are usually rotten.

I bought a 2004 C70 for an ex that had two small spots of blistering from stone chips that have not spread in the last 3-4 years; I don't know how they do it but they seem to have absolutely cracked making a non rusting car from steel.
I spent a bit of time in Sweden during winter, the roads are covered in salt and gravel (so much gravel!) so I'm not surprised Volvo has fine tuned how to protect from rust. Also, it seemed like 2 out of 3 cars there are Volvo's, often old ones, so they last a while even with those conditions!

Sorted out the bumper alignment, as it had slipped out of one of the clips, assuming the previous owner had a small bump.

There is a bit of a clunk, getting up to speed/pulling away. Not sure what it is, but is a little annoying.

Had an MOT today thought I'd get it in a month early just I case there were any horror stories, told my tester about said clunk. He had a good look/poke around and couldn't find anything. Infact he said he couldn't find anything wrong with it at all. Passed with zero advisorys!!
Zero advisories? That's astonishing for a 1k e320!

Wonder if the clunk is something transmission related, hopefully something that doesn't deteriorate or is cheap (unlikely hehe) to fix.

Never liked the Insignia for most of its life, but then neither did I like the Mondeo that I now own. But not long ago I used a friends estate, same colour as yours too infact, and was rather surprised how great it was for a shed. He uses it as a work 'van' so its always having tools and materials thrown in without much care and its stood the test of time.

I wasn't surprised as we previously had one and knew that they were a good car even though I didn't drive it much as it was the wife's company car, but its growing on me a little, it has all the toys you'd want such as DAB, fully automatic climate, cruise etc etc and its been brought up to date with the head unit although it was a pig to fit.



It'll probably be my last post about it but as a large comfy economical shed it has a lot going for it.

I had a 2011 Insignia SRI until late last year and they're good cars. Very capable and supremely stable when you really give it beans. They get a lot of stick on here, but for a family wagon do you can do worse. I had no idea they were this cheap now. That's a lot of car for your money and modern enough to have gizmos that make life easier day to day. The auto lights on my Insignia were always excellent. Rear lights popping on when it went dusk, unlike those on brand new Hyundai Tuscons that never seem to notice that its gone pitch black!

New to the thread, been shedding since 2013, whilst running a number of other weekend cars.

Started with a MY52 VW B5.5 Passat that I took from 130k to 204k, it still lives on my driveway but beyond economical repair due to now needing all the control arm bushes need replacing, still being used as a shed, as it now store a set of spare wheels and tyres.

Back in December I was lucky to be gifted an MY02 E39 530i sport touring from a friend at 135k , who had owned it since 2013 and used to bring up a young family in central London during his ownership.

Since taking over I've had the auto box fluid drained and filters changed due which has transformed the car, along with rebuilding the DISA valve.

Finally gave into boredom yesterday and gave her a bath for the first time in 6 months;

Fuel cap lock actuator failed on the E46. Caused me a bit of bother when trying to refuel.

Could buy a second hand one on eBay.

Could use a Stanley knife.

Love those 5 series estates of that vintage.

A quick washing tip for those with silver/gunmetal grey cars (I had one years ago) as the body colour is really good at hiding the dirt just clean the alloys on their own instead, it will make the whole car look clean. Saves loads of time, you can thank me later.

At the moment I have a 300K Renualt Lugana on a 03 plate I have driven it from Exeter to London at least 10 times this year
and Exeter to Cardiff again probably 10 times . I paid for it a year ago with my profits .....................From one morning !

Once you have got your head around the electrics it is quite a simple car

Completely with you, such a timeless design, many BMW estates have that timeless feel, always hankered for one of these (not many nice ones about now really) would have to be a 525/30d for me though, good shed!

Indeed, the ‘express wash’ I call it!

Also include the glass, makes a world of difference.
