DriveTribe - online car community from Clarkson/May/Hamond
Discussion
I can see the point if it is to become a properly edited, properly written alternative to car mags
What I don't get is the 'social' side of it.
I personally don't want to read tedious 'banter' and see thousands of photos of the same 15 cars that Facebook car groups already do so well.

After being quite excited by it for some time, after a few weeks DT feels like it is dying on its arse.
My main criticism is they promised to be different, to stop being "just like Carthrottle" (their words) by inviting people who were "content creators" etc... but as far as I can see, it's the same lowest common denominator as every other internet outlet.
Could be a very expensive failure if they don't ramp it up soon.

I agree that this has got off to a slow start. Wouldn't write its obituary just yet though: it's got a lot of money behind it and most of the criticism on here is coming from grumpy middle-aged men. Fabulous as we are, we aren't entirely representative...
The content articles are pretty good. Better than most PH front page articles...Mr Peel said:

True, but I'm a happy(ish) young man and I'm not a huge fan either. I'm not sure what it's really trying to do differently, and I'd rather not have yet another site to visit that doesn't really give me anything new. I don't like the layout at all too. I can see myself popping in every week to check Jethro's, Ben's and Henry's pages but I don't see how they'll generate the daily traffic and interaction that a forum like PH gets. Maybe that isn't their aim though?
I had a look yesterday
Confused by the login process (no password, link by email? Am I doing something wrong), confused by generally the whole thing.
It's almost like a weird forum/facebook/blog amalgamation that provides the worst experience of all of these, feeling like one of those spam sites with clickbait articles.

Just joined now email link available (10 minute mail, no spam ). Looks OK, spent 5 mins on it. Seems like Twitter, which I've never really 'got'. Trying to find a tribe with good articles to actually read, rather than just single line twitter-chatter with pictures.
Any recommendations?

That's what I'm trying to do on Glym 9 Garage, the whole thing about Drivetribe being that - unlike Instatw*tterbook - I can post and format proper feature articles there. Must admit I am resorting to posting the odd pic with caption now just to keep things ticking over... Any recommendations?
I haven't even tried it, tbh I think I know what I'm missing.
I called this when it was first announced. There are already plenty of places to go on the internet if you like cars, we don't need a car version of facebook and twitter - facebook and twitter already exist.
I did notice they let anyone and everyone be a "tribe leader" and some people thought this was some sort of big deal. Oh dear 😂

LoL at this. Richard Porter (SniffPetrol) made some comments on Twitter the other day about not doing work for free and a couple of "Tribe Leaders" stepped in from their lofty perches to have a go at him as they were happy to work for free so why shouldn't he be?Having seen their work vs. his I think I can help them answer that one!
I can certainly appreciate how frustrating it must be to try and get attention for your efforts on DriveTribe though, everything does seem to get lost in a fog.

Coming at it from the other angle, I wonder is it frustrating too for guys like Porter and co who have made a career out of automotive writing/media, yet on Drivetribe they're essentially no different to any other tribe leader, many of whom are doing it for free, or as a hobby - like me. Bigger tribe perhaps, better quality articles, but no different otherwise. I keep trying to think of a comparison, like comparing some random carhead's Youtube channel to that of Jay Leno's, but the Drivetribe aesthetic is so different to Youtube it's hard to compare or pick out standout tribe leaders. At least Bovingdon and Catchpole have had their names 'attached' to DT from day one so in a way they seem more like DT staff than just tribe leaders, of which there's now hundreds.Having seen their work vs. his I think I can help them answer that one!

I think the concept of Tribes will only start to work once people start unsubscribing from the weaker tribes rather than just joining because of the "I'll join your tribe if you join mine" pacts (as seen in this thread) so you are only left with Tribes with worthwhile content.
In that case, don't search for and join my McLaren F1 Drive Tribe nor my McLaren P1LM Drive TribeGandahar said:
Interesting. I had no idea that it wasn't related to Amazon but I'm not surprised that Fox is chipping in given that Clarkson writes for two Murdoch publications. It feels like rich people trying to cash in on Clarkson, Hammond and May's 'heat' and I'm not sure if it's got legs. As I type this, there's an advert for James May's Reassembler show on the BBC. I think he's the strongest, most genuine presenter of the three of them. Clarkson and Hammond appear to have been told to act more oafish and more giddy but May's more-or-less the same; his 'Ford trying to buy Ferrari' bit on TGT was the highlight for me yesterday. Clarkson and Hammond pretending to race their Fords was cringeworthy. Remember, News Corp bought MySpace for $580 million in 2005 and sold it for $35 million in 2011..
