Let them ring out. It'll all be gone in 20 years.
Personally I like 6 and 8 cylinders if we're talking even, 3 and 5 cylinders if we're going odd. V-Twin works as well, but as I prefer cars to bikes the Morgan 3-wheeler is in a bit of a class of it's own.
Good point, let’s make the most of this noise while we can. Does anyone bother watching that bks on the telly called Formula E?Personally I like 6 and 8 cylinders if we're talking even, 3 and 5 cylinders if we're going odd. Hoping the classic races and hillclimbs continue so there is something interesting to watch.

I wish that I could get that programmed into my cars! It does just go to show how different we all are.
Sorry, I like the sound, just not having it forced on every start. So unnecessary.
I can start my 911 quietly or give it a little blip. I don't need software to rasp it like a 12 year old every startup (yes its fun being a 12 year old when its 'appropriate' )

Out walking my very nervous dog this evening a blue Fiesta ST with white racing stripes over the roof and bonnet went surging past me and emitted a colossally loud bang on changing up - I suspect deliberately because we there and the road is straight-ish, so ideal for showing off his driving prowess and speed - which terrified the dog and reduced her to a even more nervy mess for a good five minutes afterwards. He then did it in the next gear. The cringeworthy thing is he was probably only doing 50.
I could still hear him from probably a mile away.
It sounded st. OK, it was 2030 and traffic was light but the road backs on to a housing estate and I’m sure they all enjoyed the show.
I don’t like loud cars especially but this sort of craven attention seeking is more unpalatable again.

My wife has a firm opinion on my Vanquish's exhaust. It is far too loud.
That means it is just right.
However, she might have a point - when I start it up, passers-by do jump. When I heard the noise, I knew I had to buy one (I had the normal Vanquish but the Vanquish S has the better noise).
Is it one of those that does a fake rev jump at start up? They are a bit naff. That means it is just right.

It isn't the noise on start up, though. It is the noise when one is driving it that is glorious.
I saw a Huracan Performante today ,it was accelerating a bit . .
I approved of it's V10 sound......

There are loud exhausts.
Then there are LOUD exhausts
Then there are pops and bangs .....that just make the car sound broken .
I tolerate the first line only .
It’s tricky. We should all love loud cars. But not the ones that race past our houses in narrow residential roads. With the drivers being twwwtty. I’ve owned a V8 Jensen and TVR that people loved the sound of. There’s a road which bypasses my village, for very good reason, that everyone screams along - every proper hp engine that goes past at high revs makes me smile, without exception. I probably wouldn’t smile if it was outside my window at 6 every morning. Horses for courses. Then there are LOUD exhausts

As I've said before I'm guessing that pretty much everyone is wishing that we all would drive around in silence in electric cars, and then at least nobody will have anything to moan about.
This thread is now even starting to make me think that I should sell my petrol lawnmower for an electric one to keep the peace.

Cars do not tend to be that bad offenders, it tends for the most part to be bikes that are the issue around where I live and the number of them that think that waking everyone in a half mile radius up is unbelievable.
I suspect the thing that gets me the most, is that the sound is not "good", it's just really loud. Really loud is not good, it's just obnoxious and anti social.
I lived just off a busy main road when I was having my house refurbed. The bane of my life was dheads on 4 stroke scooters roaring and droning their way up an down the road at all hours of the day and night. It's a st sound with a horrible bass resonance. I presume the pea brains that do it are making their "bikes" (they're not bikes they're scooters) "sporty" (oh FFS.....).I suspect the thing that gets me the most, is that the sound is not "good", it's just really loud. Harleys on straight pipe are also 100% obnoxious, especially in the city. They sound like some bit of old industrial machinery cranked up to 11. Awful noise.

Single cylinder 4 strokes are awful sounding things, Harley’s, used to think the same but don’t mind them these days. Older 4 cylinder bikes with slashed up 4-1 also sound st, rev slowly and don’t move very fast Harleys on straight pipe are also 100% obnoxious, especially in the city. But, if I did have one, I would prefer not to have it done by electronics and have the option not for it to happen, seems an odd 'feature' at first, but I bet it sells well on the demo. You would not be able to hold back the grin as it starts I bet.
I sometimes think my Carrera could do with a little more 'edge' releasing from its exhaust sound. Its got the full air cooled flat six noise at 10/10ths but its surprisingly quiet most of the time (well, apart from the period gearbox/shifter rattles)
Above all, a nice sound is a nice sound. Don't want it in my ears at 4am, not to happy when a sports bike with a 'race' can gives it full beans every single day for 3 months (though I suspect he eventually fell off).
But I am going to miss a nice noise when everything is electric and petrol cars are limping from heritage fuel stop to heritage fuel stop, especially V10's. They are the pinnacle for me.

At 50odd I'm not a fan but I guess the yoof are copying what they see on twitter etc as I did watching rallying I guess. My eldest had a no backbox, no cat thing on his madly tuned Cooper S, at least we knew when he was within 1/2 mile of home.
To quote my own reply, I find my Golf GTi mk7.5 a bit quiet to drive, I could select sport mode and the soundakter kicks in Hate mode select as well.Gary C said:

That is starting it in Sports mode (which is set as my default). It might not do it in Normal - I will have to check (can't remember the last time it was out of Sports TBH).

and I bet you grinned a mile wide when starting it for the first time
I’ve had my fair share of loud cars; the current TVR Tuscan is one of them but IMO it’s not obnoxiously so... some Tuscan owners fit straight pipes and for me it sounds horrendous.
My neighbour has a BMW S1000RR bike and on cold start it shakes the panes of glass in our windows - first time I’ve felt myself getting annoyed by a loud exhaust but it is ridiculously loud. Doesn’t help that he lets it idle whilst he gets his power ranger suit on and closes up his garage etc...
I must be getting old!

Sounds like he’s modified the exhaust from your description, I own the same bike. Most of the muffling occurs in the cat and many remove it and fit a larger exhaust. My neighbour has a BMW S1000RR bike and on cold start it shakes the panes of glass in our windows - first time I’ve felt myself getting annoyed by a loud exhaust but it is ridiculously loud. I find my factory standard bike loud so I manoeuvre it into position to leave, get on, start and leave at low revs without letting it idle (and no power ranger suit!).
FI 4-cyclinder bikes like the S1000RR don’t need any warm up time but historically at least bikes benefited from a small amount of warm up time.
I don’t think it’s getting old, it’s just annoying and the S1000RR doesn’t sound particularly good stationary making a racket.
