This article is absolutely perfect 'forum frothing' bait. It's got everything to let PHers roll out their new car cliches.
- V8 being replaced by a 4cyl
- Hybrid tech
- A heavier new model
- Turbo over NA
- A high price tag
Just perfection, PH. You're nailing it.
I think you need to learn what a cliché actually is. - V8 being replaced by a 4cyl
- Hybrid tech
- A heavier new model
- Turbo over NA
- A high price tag
Just perfection, PH. You're nailing it.

Which covers about 90% of the response to this article.
"I cAn'T bElIEvE iT's NoT a V8 AnY mOrE. mErC hAvE lOsT mY bUsInEsS."
It's almost like PH editorial team know exactly which buttons to push to get people rolling out the tired, old tropes.
(PS - "trope: a significant or recurrent theme")

We know what this 4 pot will sound like, and we know what the V8 sounds like - fair to make a comment. It will weigh more, we know that heavier cars are generally less thrilling to throw around the corners and can numb the feel of a car - fair to make a comment. Many people prefer the characteristics (noise, power delivery/curve etc) of a NA engine vs turbocharged. So why is it unreasonable to base comments on these things? When new, lighter cars get released, they often get praised here.

Plenty of people on here have or have had C63s. Many people have also gone from a car with a V8 to a 4 cylinder, and/or a hybrid. Many have also driven heavier and lighter cards, likewise for having driven both turbocharged and NA engines. All of which they can base an opinion.

I’m pretty sure nobody has ever driven a car with a drivetrain like the C63, though. It could be utter rubbish of course but I’m nearly certain the usual simplistic commentary doesn’t apply as it’s anything but simplistic. I see ingredients that could yield an interesting result. If not, there’s always the naturally aspired AMG V8 of yesteryear which was a masterpiece. We know what this 4 pot will sound like, and we know what the V8 sounds like - fair to make a comment. Mercedes have been selling a C class with a hybridised 2.0 turbo four for some time now. This is obviously turned up to 11, but it's not exactly radical.https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/mercedes/c-clas...

Two identical cars - one is a hybrid 4 cylinder that sounds like a 1970s Hoover being fed 480V when it isn’t playing video game noises at you, the other has a thumping V8 which sounds awesome. Both are powerful, both are fast.
Which do you prefer?
Well you can only buy one of them new, so I guess it comes down to priorities. In a couple of years time sub £100k V8s basically won’t exist. Plenty of old cars for people who really can’t get over downsizing/electrification Which do you prefer?

I might be wrong, and I'll be very happy if I am, but I'm confident I won't be.
That's before we get to the fact it's a few hundred kgs heavier....

If Mercedes could just make it sound like a tuned BDA on a Welsh Rally stage, im in.
Nothing, absolutely nothing will ever sound like that again. Even better is a BDG on twin 45 Webers at 9k rpmOne step further ,Ford/ Cosworth 3.4 GAA with Kugelfischer mechanical injection...epic...I miss my Capri so much..

I am confused (in the way that i am not, just pointing out nonsense)
The 63 represented the 6.3l engine...this is a 2 litre engine so surely it should be C20?
What is '63' about it?

New car seems like interesting engineering. Let's see what it actually like.

The outgoing model was a 4 litre. The model before that was a 6.2. It has never had a 6.3. Did you also say the same about the A45 which doesn't have a 4.5? Or the old S600 which had a 5.5? Or the old x500 models which were a 4.7?The 63 represented the 6.3l engine...this is a 2 litre engine so surely it should be C20?
