Interesting. That obviously mean’s Andy Green is out, I wonder why.
Maybe the fact the Andy Green is now 61 would explain a lot![laugh](/inc/images/laugh.gif)
So anyone here a hotshot test pilot with a few million quid in the family funds?
Resorting to "buy a drive" either genius or bloody madness.

This could be one of their better ideas, although the engines are on loan from the MoD aren’t they? So any perspective buyer would probably need to come from a country that operates the eurofighter I’d have thought? ecsrobin said:

Nah, there's plenty of ways to limit a non-UK/other national from accessing such technical information.ChocolateFrog said:
Interesting development.
Surprised they haven't just gone £20m to be the owner of the LSR.
Glad it hasn't been scrapped though, Newquay was a great day out, 5 years ago![eek](/inc/images/eek.gif)
They still need the rocket (mooted to be from Nammo, who supply rocket motors for things like air to air missiles) too; the car did 628mph with the jet alone during the 2019 test runs in south africa. It needs the oomph of the rocket motor to take the record, which presumably won't be free or cheap.Surprised they haven't just gone £20m to be the owner of the LSR.

I could see them re-engineering the engine system to make it 100% rocket. It might be a bit "well I wouldn't start from here", but the overall car design seems to have been proven fundamentally good.

I wonder if there are any funded PhDs in electronics / RF areas of research going. Assuming they would accept someone without a first, but a tonne of work history in R&D.

The point of the jet is to get it above about 300mph, to where the aero surfaces provide stability; the rest of the thrust from it is just a bonus.![scratchchin](/inc/images/scratchchin.gif)

This is to avoid the "I started under rocket power and now am heading at 45º to the intended direction" problem.
I also wonder what the investor appetite for an LSR attempt is in the current climate, the admirable STEM aspect notwithstanding. Backing something that involves a rocket engine and a honking great reheated turbofan may not be 'on message' for a lot of companies now. I think the days of public interest in the likes of Campbell in Bluebird K7 at Coniston, Thrust 2 & SSR may be behind us? I don't know. I'd love Bloodhound to be revived though.
I applied (unsuccessfully of course!) to drive SSC back in the day. A few blokes at work know 'Dead Dog' Green and reckoned he was the best man for the job when he was selected. Maybe at 61 he's decided that after surviving Tornado F3, Harrier and oversteer on the desert floor at 700mph+ he wants to stop poking the devil with a pointy stick?
