If people have bought all the 400bhp rattly old 4wd Japanese saloons for 50k the Golf would sell.
Here's a rattly old Japanese coupe call the 400R that's around the 50k mark, at least volkswagon didn't name it the R33 I wouldn't get too excited, they've done lots of concept cars over the years for Worthersee etc. and they never make production. It does seem to fuel the VW fanboy fire though, so fair play to them.
I have a nigh-on 400bhp APR tuned Mk6 Golf R and it is ridiculous fun; the way it still throws your head back in 6th gear is hilarious. Although 4cyl is a little on the boring side, i've heard the Mk7 is an improvement and there's definitely childish enjoyment to be had from the huge BANG every time the DSG hits home with the next gear. I can't imagine how good this one would be with proper OEM mapping and -100kg with the new platform.

That's what I thought. The same powertrain as the new TT-RS (unless it really is called a TT quattro sport?!) being re-used in a Golf R 'Evo' and the new RS3. About 400hp in a Golf. Perhaps they will go bonkers and do an RS1/Polo R 'EVO' with 300hp if these go into production soon.EricE said:
The new Golf R already looks surprisingly "over the top" in the flesh when I saw it. I can’t imagine what this will look like.
Surely you jest ? the Mk7 R is about "over the top" as a leather patch on a beige cardigan. Ignore the wheel and you've be hard pressed to tell it from a 1.4 shopping trolley from the front or side.Something like Astra VXR extreme ? yeah, thats over the top, but not the R.
The article isn't clear:

For now VW is saying the R 400 is just a show car, that statement delivered with a wink suggesting there might be something more production ready in the pipeline. Fingers crossed and the ball's in your court AMG...
Which appears to imply there was an actual car, but all I see in the article is a few drawings. Is there actually a mock up car, if so where is the pic ?new pictures and specs:
