Good write up, I can't wait now! Ive bookmarked and will read the stelvio write up later.
I'd assume by the fact that someone hired you a 500 abarth that you have a few more car hire options than myself! If I was to be blacklisted I'd have to go with one of the big hire companies and pay an extra £35 a day, just for being under 25!

BTW it's probably "Kia Picanto or Similar" which means you might get this

We had a Kia (I think) of some sort in Cyprus a couple of years back.

Was asthmatic as hell and hampered by an auto box (nearly all their rental cars were oddly - all they could offer without was a C3 and that was too small!).

On the other hand, it was perfectly acceptable transport - Fairly quiet, comfortable ride, fairly economical...

I wouldn't buy one, but as a renter it was ok.

I will definatly make a thread about the trip, with a section dedicated to my noble steed. I will do a proper and fair write up for would be owners/renters, you know the useful stuff like will it oversteer, how long until the brakes boil, MPG when bouncing off the limiter in 4th and all the other things your stereotypical Picanto fancier worries about.

Would prefer not to say before the event, just in case! I could have had a Clio mk3 1.2(non turbo) or an Astra diesel if I'd wanted, but I have driven my sisters exact Clio a fair bit so that wouldn't be much of a adventure and I'd rather walk than drive an Astra that distance!

The choice was the Picanto or the Astra, I'm sure the latter is faster and more comfortable but I think hammering two small city cars will bring more smiles per mile than a pair of diesel Vauxhalls!

I used 35 litres in 175 miles.

"You have got to get a car that handles really well. This is extremely important, and there’s a lot of debate on this subject—about what kind of car handles best. Some say a front-engined car; some say a rear-engined car. I say a rented car. Nothing handles better than a rented car. You can go faster, turn corners sharper, and put the transmission into reverse while going forward at a higher rate of speed in a rented car than in any other kind. You can also park without looking, and can use the trunk as an ice chest. Another thing about a rented car is that it’s an all-terrain vehicle. Mud, snow, water, woods—you can take a rented car anywhere. True, you can’t always get it back—but that’s not your problem, is it?"

(P J O'Rourke: "How to drive fast on drugs while getting your wing wang squeezed without spilling your drink")

Remember also that the Golden Rule Of The Three Fs ("If it flies, floats or ****s, it's better to rent it") applies equally to cars.

Reminds me of when I had a car for work for the day - went to a job in the middle of a field (power line maintainance)

Phoned the guy I was meant to be meeting to find out where they were

Him: "Just down that dirt track into the field, it's a bit soft mind"
Me: "Will my car get down there?"
Him: "What do you have?"
Me: "Astra"
Him: "Hmmm... maybe not"
Me: "It's a hire car like...."
Him: "OH! A hire car will go fkin anywhere! Get down here!"

And it did biggrin

A friend and I are going for a short break in Scotland and due to our age and "checkered" motoring history have both had to settle for a Kia Picanto hire car (one each). The plan is a trip across Scotland and a go on the Applecross Pass, lap of the Isle of Skye, then pick our way back to the airport the following day.

I have never driven a Picanto before and both of us are above 6ft2(no goatee) and not of a slight build so were not expecting to be comfortable, just wondering what these are like to drive?

Any insight on the Kia, or recommended roads gladly appreciated
No No No No

A couple of years ago the Mrs. bought me a supercar driving day at Croft (Lambo Murcie), but to get from Newcastle airport to Croft, I needed a hire car and hired on the chance I might get an upgrade. No such luck.
Lets just say that the contrast between a 640 bhp lambo and the picanto was quite large!
One of them was noisy, uncomfortable, with a dreadfully small boot and the Picanto was similar!!!!

That's a point OP - there is no boot in a Picanto. Yes you can lift the tailgate and it looks like there is space, but once you put stuff in you quickly realise there is not!

I can neither confirm or deny these rumours! wink

You got it in one mate, you couldn't do me a favour and keep the companies name off here until we have completed our excursion? I'm not planning anything stupid but don't want anything to go wrong, especially as due to the situation in work it looks like a weekend in a picanto is going to be my summer holiday this year!rolleyes

Nah I've just heard they're a bit dodgy, lol. They are exceptionally cheap though which is awesome.

Last time I hired a van I used Hertz - only firm in the country that'll hire to me because I'm under 21.
